And welcome to the twelfth episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/ceasblog?s=%23Chemengcatchup\" target=\"_blank\">#ChemEngCatchUp<\/a>. We take a visit to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceas.manchester.ac.uk\/our-research\/themes-challenges\/themes\/sustainable-engineering\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sustainable Industrial Engineering Research Group<\/a> this month as we meet Dr Rosa Cuellar Franca. I was informed of the exciting and important work Rosa was working on during a recent meeting, so I went to find out more about it. I wasn\u2019t disappointed:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Hi Rosa. Thanks for talking to us. Could you start by describing your research, for the layman, in ten sentences or less?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/39ZCa7P6s18?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>So, everyday products that we use as part of our routine &#8211; for example cleaning products, fuels, medicine, even food &#8211; have a negative impact on the environment. This is because all the activities that go into making these products involve the extraction of raw materials, energy consumption, there is transport involved, and waste is generated as well.<\/p>\n<p>All these activities, that we call part of the life-cycle of products, will have a negative impact. But making a product more environmentally friendly is not an easy task because you have other economic and social aspects behind them. Part of my research is to find the right balance between these three sustainability pillars, to make sure that whatever alternative we come up with has a more environmentally friendly impact on our environment. But also takes into account the social and economic aspects of it.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fantastic, thank you. Could you tell us a bit more about how your research can benefit the public?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zl3dwTDqmxY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Well nowadays consumers are more aware of the sustainability impacts of their activities, what we call the environmental footprint. So through my research I\u2019m contributing towards making our consumption habits more sustainable. And also, informing the public how small changes can make a big impact, a big difference, to the whole environment.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And how did you first get interested in your research area?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As chemical engineers I believe we have a big responsibility to make products and processes more sustainable and that\u2019s one of the reasons I came to Manchester to do an MSc in Environmental Technology &#8211; to find out more about the engineering application of sustainable development. And I was lucky enough to get to work closely with leading experts in sustainability. One thing led to another and I really got into this research area that I now really, really enjoy.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Going back a bit further, then, can you tell us who or what first inspired your interests in science and engineering?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YkBPgVp5W7s?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Well my favourite subjects in school were Maths, Chemistry, and Physics! I was always very curious about how things were made and understanding physical phenomena. He\u2019s a chemical engineer and he\u2019s always been really passionate about it, so I grew up listening to all these really exciting stories about the workplace. And I guess I wanted to live that myself.<\/p>\n<p>He taught me to see the world in a very practical way and it\u2019s something that I really, really enjoy about life.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>That\u2019s a lovely answer, Rosa \u2013 thanks for sharing that. Moving away from work for a question, could you tell us a bit about your other interests? What do you get up to in your spare time?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I have many interests outside work. One of them is oil painting \u2013 it\u2019s something I\u2019ve been doing since the age of four. And I\u2019ve recently taken water colour lessons, and I found it to be really challenging but relaxing at the same time. So I do enjoy painting.<\/p>\n<p>I also like to read and go to the cinema, or go to the ballet.<\/p>\n<p>And I like to travel. I recently went to Switzerland, to visit some friends. And we went to the Swiss Alps to see the snow. The first time I\u2019d ever seen proper snow! That was a very beautiful place to visit.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Thanks, Rosa. Time for the last question. So that\u2019s really helpful, especially for an early career academic like me.<\/p>\n<p>And also the geographical location. We\u2019re at the heart of an industrial city and that\u2019s very important for our research because it helps us to make the bridge between the academic work that we do here and the application in real life. So having industry involved, and being close, is a great advantage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brilliant \u2013 thank you, Rosa.
