These powders are acidic<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">similar to concentrated acids such as sulfuric or nitric, but unlike those acids are powders and are handleable<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">. Zeolites are used in the cracking crude oil fractions such as, gas oil into gasoline and also as ion exchange media to purify or soften water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">I use these catalysts for <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">oil and gas projects <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">,<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">the recycling of plastic waste and the production of biofuels and bio<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">lubricants<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">I carry out <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">collaborative research with academics in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Bath, Cardiff, Durham and further afield in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Canada, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Spain and the USA<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Industrial projects include Argent Energy, AxionPolymers, B&amp;M Longworth, BASF\/ Engelhard, the Co-op, JM, Nirex, PlasticsEurope<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\"> and Saudi Aramco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What first inspired your interests in Chemical Engineering?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Two sources of inspiration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">O<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">ne of my roles when working in Industry for SGS back in 1988<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">was, as <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">part of a team of three<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">to<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\"> certify a gas and condensate metering station on the Kuwait-Iraq border. In this role we had to check the integrity of orifice plates inserted into the gas and condensate lines to create a differential pressure \u2013 to allow flow measurement (check out experiment in Y1 labs). The downside of this job was that there 24 lines to check, there were lots of large nuts and bolts to undo and the plates themselves were the diameter of a horse<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">!<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\"> Not only that the plates were around 500 metres from the air conditioned control room and the temperature was typically around 35-50degC. Phew, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">just<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">started sweating just thinking about it!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-443\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/ceasblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2018\/11\/machine-1.png?w=298\" alt=\"machine.png\" width=\"298\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/ceasblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2018\/11\/machine-1.png 475w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/ceasblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2018\/11\/machine-1-230x300.png 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><br \/>\nMy second was around 6 years later, when I\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">met the late, great, Albert Rushton working on a commercial\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">research project at UMIST in Chemistry. Albert was very friendly, great fun and a filtration expert<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\"> lecturering <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">in Chem Eng. He taught me basic batch reactor design and introduced me to filter media. He made such an impression on me that I jumped at the chance to work in CEAS in 1998 and ended up teaching reactor design. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Who\u2019d have thought it. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">I have never forgotten him and the new filtration experiment <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">(check out Y2 labs) <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">was my way of saying thanks to him and giving a permanent legacy to that 24 month project <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">when <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">we worked <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">together as <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">a team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where did you attend University?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) graduating in Chemistry in 1980 and with a PhD in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your favourite part about your job here at Manchester?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-440 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/ceasblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2018\/11\/IMG_0141.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0141\" width=\"389\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/ceasblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2018\/11\/IMG_0141.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/ceasblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2018\/11\/IMG_0141-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/ceasblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2018\/11\/IMG_0141-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/ceasblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2018\/11\/IMG_0141-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a tough question. When I\u2019m teaching I love it, when I\u2019m working in the lab., I love that.<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019d have to say, my most favourite part and the best thing about my job, is graduation. It is a privilege to see students I have had a hand in educating the next generation of Chemical \u00a0Engineers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now for some different questions, let&#8217;s get to you know what you&#8217;re like outside of work! What do you do when you&#8217;re not working? Interests and hobbies?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">I\u2019ve stopped \u201cruining a good walk\u201d these days and hung up my golf clubs\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">handicap 11<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">. These days I love the peace and quiet of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">long <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">walk<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">s<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">around <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Edale and Langsett <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Reservoir<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\"> and chilling to movies on Freeview <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Pleased to say I still have my footie boots and \u201ccompeted\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">on the 5-a-side pitch <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">in the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Morton Sports Day<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">. At some stages the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">2016 staff team <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">had<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\"> combined age of 250 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">on the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">pitch! <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">W<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">e won 1 drew 3 and lost 1<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">mostly down to Gary Burns and Darren Huyton \u2013 it has to be said. Great fun though and the student support during the games \u2013 knocked us all out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s your favourite sports team?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Oldham Athletic<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">sadly back in, what used to be called Division 4. Bu<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">t <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">I like all sorts \u2013 big sci-fi fan (Star Trek \u2013\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">old and reboot). <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">I\u2019m a big softie and I love films about life and the celebration of life so <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Cinema Paradisio and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Mediterraneo are a couple of my favourites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>And finally Arthur, what&#8217;s your favourite genre of music?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Can I have two?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Pop \u00a0&amp;
