Where do I start?!<\/p>\n<p>My welcome\/introduction consisted of two days of talks about IBM, group activities, setup etc. They introduced us to our managers (who I had met earlier in the year on a visit to Winchester) and to any previous year IT\u2019s (\u201cindustrial trainees\u201d) who help you to settle in.<\/p>\n<p>After that it was only a few days before we were assigned to projects. I work in the PTC (Platform Technology Centre) which deals with companies that IBM has\u00a0acquired. Tasks involve porting software\/data into the equivalent IBM products and making sure all the code is valid and legal (e.g. correct licenses are in place etc).<\/p>\n<p>Although the PTC isn\u2019t\u00a0primarily\u00a0a software development department, there is opportunity for it. At first I was involved with an internal project making graphs using an external Java library. More recently I have been one of three developers on a project porting source code from an acquired company into IBM\u2019s source code\u00a0management\u00a0system. Again, this was in Java (IBM\u2019s main language from what I\u2019ve seen) but I really extended my knowledge \u2013 threads, timers, logging, shutdown handlers\u2026 It has given me the opportunity to take what I learnt in university and put it into practice. It\u2019s one thing following John Latham\u2019s exercises and another to structure all the code by yourself! I also use an IDE here (Eclipse) instead of a text editor because it has so many useful features such as keeping track of your methods, auto complete method names etc. As you know, in university we use text editors like gedit and I\u2019m so thankful that I learnt that way. I think writing your classes from scratch teaches you such good programming practices. I feel like the CS course prepared me extremely well for my industrial placement year and this year has prepared me well for my future career.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of the technical things I\u2019ve learnt since arriving:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>extended my Java knowledge<\/li>\n<li>JavaScript \u2013 JSON, AJAX<\/li>\n<li>Portlets and Widgets<\/li>\n<li>OpenLayers and OpenStreetMap (like GoogleMaps API)<\/li>\n<li>More practice with Linux<\/li>\n<li>A bit about servers<\/li>\n<li>SQL on command line with DB2 database<\/li>\n<li>IBM specific products (quite a few!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019m sure there\u2019s more, but that\u2019s just off the top of my head. You also gain transferable skills like presentation, communication, networking etc.<\/p>\n<p>My industrial year has shown me what it\u2019s like to develop software in the real world. Sometimes at university you can\u2019t understand where something fits in and when anyone would use it! I remember thinking, \u201cdoes anyone actually bother with this agile software\u00a0development\u00a0schedule thing?\u201d \u2013 they do! In fact, they have programs to help keep track of it all.<\/p>\n<p>As well as the working side of things, there\u2019s plenty of social activities. There are about 50 IT\u2019s in Hursley who have made their own social club. Activities such as Nando\u2019s, the cinema, \u00a0ice skating, other generally social things and even a ski trip! There\u2019s also the pub quiz in Winchester (we\u00a0<em>will<\/em>win one day!). IBM Hursley is lovely location \u2013 the grounds are amazing \u2013 and sometimes people gather at the club house after work.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/compsci\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/2019\/01\/Laura-Com-sci-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Group of people\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/compsci\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/2019\/01\/Laura-Com-sci.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/compsci\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/2019\/01\/Laura-Com-sci-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/compsci\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/72\/2019\/01\/Laura-Com-sci-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>IBM also have a big initiative called \u201cgiveback\u201d where you do volunteering during your working hours. I have painted at a school playground, tidied up a cycle track at an activity centre and am involved with an ongoing event going into a primary school.
