Hello, my name is Sam Joynson and I am 3<\/span>rd<\/span>\u00a0Year BSc Computer Science Student. During the unforgettable year of 2020<\/span>, between my second and third years of studying,<\/span>\u00a0I spent part of my summer on an internship with Barclays,\u00a0<\/span>a post<\/span>\u00a0I had acquired through a series of interviews and a \u2018Spring Week\u2019 during my first year here in Manchester.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The original intention was for me to work down in\u00a0<\/span>South<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Manchester, where Barclays\u2019s vast technology campus is based<\/span>\u00a0outside of a small town called Knutsford<\/span>,<\/span> for approximately 9 weeks. However due to the pandemic, my face-to-face internship was <\/span>completed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>virtually for the shortened time of 6 weeks. Initially I was pretty disappointed that I wouldn\u2019t be able to work within this gorgeous campus and that I\u2019d be desk bound for <\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>whole experience, but then I was also extremely grateful that Barclays had still decided to\u00a0<\/span>honour the internships created<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>that they had gone to the effort of restructuring the whole\u00a0<\/span>program<\/span>me<\/span>\u00a0for us instead of just cancelling everything<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0July eventually rolled around (after some very strange and long months) and I returned back to my student home in Manchester to start this internship<\/span>, whereby the extent of my commute<\/span>, depicted to the right,<\/span>\u00a0was getting out of bed and walking a metre to my desk (<\/span>something<\/span>\u00a0I very much appreciated from time to time)<\/span>. The first few days of the internship were very strange for me<\/span>,<\/span> as prior to commencing, I had no real idea <\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>what I was actually going to be able to do now that I wasn\u2019t going into the offices at all – and <\/span>the new setup was equally unfamiliar to the staff at Barclays<\/span>! The first days were <\/span>packed<\/span>\u00a0full with massive Zoom calls where<\/span>\u00a0everyone on the internship scheme was welcomed into Barclays<\/span>\u00a0by a range of staff<\/span>\u00a0and a\u00a0<\/span>\u2018roadmap\u2019 was set out for our\u00a0<\/span>next 6 weeks<\/span>. This was followed by a range of virtual team building exercises such as a\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>Pub Quiz<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and \u2018Picture Bingo\u2019 just to break us in easily and get us used to this the world of \u2018online working\u2019<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>These online activities might<\/span>\u00a0have looked<\/span>\u00a0very<\/span>\u00a0similar to the image on the left if it were\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>face-to-face<\/span>\u00a0internship as originally planned<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

During the initial week of the\u00a0<\/span>internship<\/span>\u00a0we spent a lot of time creating accounts to access the Barclays\u2019s virtual systems, acquiring the software of which we\u2019d need for the remaining duration of the scheme and getting to grips with all of the secure processes that run within the bank and how we can make the most\u00a0<\/span>of them. Just like\u00a0<\/span>any other Technology Department, I was bombarded with a plethora of technical issues w<\/span>h<\/span>ere I couldn\u2019t access certain services, authenticate myself or download anything on my own virtual computer.\u00a0<\/span>I was definitely not the only one\u00a0<\/span>out\u00a0<\/span>of the 1,200 interns who had started the internship with Barclays across the globe who was met with technical problems,\u00a0<\/span>and the progress I made during my first week was\u00a0<\/span>initially slow<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>In<\/span>\u00a0fact<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0it wasn\u2019t until my fourth week (so over halfway through the experience) where I actually managed to flatten out all of these initial issues!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite such initial setbacks I was quickly welcomed to my assigned department which was Shared Technology<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>this department is concerned\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>the vast range of technology that is present across a multitude\u00a0<\/span>of branches within Barclays<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0whether\u00a0<\/span>Online Banking, Mobile Services,\u00a0<\/span>FinTech<\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>BarclayCard<\/span>\u00a0to name a few. Within this department I was integrated into the API (Application Programming Interface) Development team where<\/span>\u00a0I took on the role of a RESTFUL API Developer<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The role\u00a0<\/span>required me to quickly learn and understand all of the programming practises and software standards used across the bank. Alongside this I also learned about the typical lifecycle of my department and the range of roles which were available, all of which I found very useful and interesting.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"barclays<\/p>\n

A normal day for me during this internship\u00a0<\/span>consisted of 3 key parts:\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>alling and working with my team to enhance my knowledge and practise my coding skills with regards to API Development,<\/span>\u00a0personally<\/span>\u00a0arranging and speaking with a\u00a0<\/span>range<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>well experienced\u00a0<\/span>Directors<\/span>\u00a0across the bank, and<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0large calls\/workshops with the rest of the internship cohort. Besides all of the\u00a0<\/span>scheduled calls and activities, which normally consumed about 2\/3 hours of my day, the day itself was mine to fill.\u00a0<\/span>I was set a lot of self-study work by team<\/span>, alongside a range of interesting facilities provided by Barclays for to me to greaten my knowledge and understanding of how the many arms of a bank actually work<\/span>. Aside from a bank<\/span>\u00a0being a place where I store my\u00a0money\u00a0I had no clue how they\u2019re actually structured (<\/span>I now realise just<\/span>\u00a0how complex and extensive their business is!).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0despite Barclays<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0best intentions and attempts to still carry out this internship\u00a0<\/span>with regards to the pandemic, of which I\u2019m endlessly appreciative of, I do believe that my virtual experience of an internship wasn\u2019t as exciting and beneficial as it would have been if it was to have been carried out within a normal face-to-face working environment. And before I explain why this is the\u00a0<\/span>case<\/span>\u00a0I just want to emphasise that this was due to no fault of Barclays\u00a0<\/span>whatsoever, \u00a0it<\/span>\u00a0was merely just the result of the uncomfortable situation\u00a0<\/span>that we had<\/span> all been placed in during 2020 and 2021. Undeniably I think the main problem that I experienced <\/span>was that meeting a vast range of new people across Barclays and being welcomed into the company\u00a0<\/span>purely over a webcam and microphone <\/span>was<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>an extremely challenging and difficult social situation to be in. And<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>al<\/span>though I happily met at least 50 or so lovely people across arranged meetings and workshops, I never felt as though I knew these people on a personal level<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0as such welcoming interactions are fairly\u00a0<\/span>challenging\u00a0<\/span>with people that you\u2019ve never seen in the flesh before.<\/span> So\u00a0as you can imagine, I never felt as though I had properly bonded with anyone within this team or that I really knew them, something\u00a0<\/span>I would have done if I was physically in the office with them.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For me there were a lot of things I took away from my experience during the summer. First of all<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0it made realise how vast a massive bank like Barclays is and how many amazing job opportunities\u00a0<\/span>there are out there for so many different career paths.<\/span>\u00a0I also developed new skillsets ranging from knowing how to code using industry standards to socialising and interacting with others over a virtual environment.\u00a0<\/span>It also\u00a0<\/span>made me appreciate\u00a0<\/span>how big businesses are\u00a0<\/span>effected<\/span>\u00a0by the current pandemic and how they\u2019re\u00a0<\/span>handling the\u00a0<\/span>consequential\u00a0<\/span>e<\/span>ffects.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In light of this,\u00a0<\/span>I would really recommend\u00a0<\/span>that current students look for<\/span>\u00a0some sort of experience\u00a0<\/span>within a large national\/global company, whether it be for a week, a summer or a year, just so\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>this massive side of our modern world is opened up to you<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0as I found it a very interesting and enlightening experience.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>internship<\/span>\u00a0has also made me realise what challenges may lie ahead for students such as ourselves<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>as\u00a0<\/span>meeting anyone within a new place of work has proven to be quite a difficult experience,\u00a0<\/span>al<\/span>though in ways it can also be rather rewarding!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I had an amazing time during summer on this internship and it will be something I\u2019ll never forget for a plethora or reasons. Luckily<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0I also managed to land myself a place on the<\/span>\u00a0Barclays\u00a0<\/span>graduate scheme which commences upon my graduation during this summer<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0so I\u2019m very much hoping that at some point in the near future I will have the ability to commute to the technology campus and meet my unknown colleagues<\/span>\u00a0along with those<\/span>\u00a0I met during my spring week all those years ago<\/span>!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
