These materials have been proven to be unsustainable due to their non-biodegradability and the harm that they pose to the environment and our health. However, it is important to avoid regrettable substitutions, in which materials are replaced with another that introduce additional problems. Examples of this include the use of regenerated cellulose and bio-based fibres as substitutes, which causes similar harm as synthetic fibres.
