{"id":102,"date":"2017-02-03T14:19:13","date_gmt":"2017-02-03T14:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/?page_id=102"},"modified":"2017-07-26T10:15:48","modified_gmt":"2017-07-26T09:15:48","slug":"edition-02","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/edition-02\/","title":{"rendered":"Edition 02"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wow.\u00a0 That\u2019s the right word, when exposed to the astounding spread of world-leading science and engineering to be found at Manchester.\u00a0 Though the diversity presented here is evident, some quite amazing cross-disciplinary threads are clear, uniting our people.<\/p>\n<p>We have people using the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/limits-on-active-to-sterile-neutrino-oscillations-from-disappearance-searches-in-the-minos-daya-bay-and-bugey-3-experiments\/\">200-year old mathematical theorem to hunt for sterile neutrinos<\/a>, and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/bayesian-uncertainty-quantification-for-transmissibility-of-influenza-norovirus-and-ebola-using-information-geometry\/\">model the transmission of the flu virus<\/a>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>We have people working on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/deadness-and-how-to-disprove-liveness-in-hybrid-dynamical-systems\/\">formal proof of properties<\/a> in complex systems as diverse as neural pathways and smart grids, inspired by a quote about life and death from an ancient Roman philosopher. And, we have people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/modelling-multi-phase-liquid-sediment-scour-and-resuspension-induced-by-rapid-flows-using-smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics-sph-accelerated-with-a-graphics-processing-unit-gpu\/\">developing new approaches to model multi-phase liquids<\/a> using high performance computing.<\/p>\n<p>Interdisciplinary work is core to Manchester\u2019s mission, however it is clear that the discipline fundamentals certainly do not go untended.<\/p>\n<p>Enzymatic reactions are fundamental to all life on Earth.\u00a0 Here we have two new results, which show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/deformylation-reaction-by-a-nonheme-manganeseiii-peroxo-complex-via-initial-hydrogen-atom-abstraction\/\">a deeper explanation\u00a0for aldehyde deformylation<\/a>, and a n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/integrated-catalysis-opens-new-arylation-pathways-via-regiodivergent-enzymatic-c-h-activation\/\">ew method for synthetic\/organic catalysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a rigorous empirical study, Manchester scientists\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/not-poles-apart-antarctic-soil-fungal-communities-show-similarities-to-those-of-the-distant-arctic\/\">compiled and analysed a database of 30,000 fungal species<\/a>, finding strong evidence they can travel the full span of the planet, being found anywhere from North to South Pole. In a beautiful parallel, an impressive 10-year field experiment shows\u00a0how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/plant-diversity-and-root-traits-benefit-physical-properties-key-to-soil-function-in-grasslands\/\">diversity of plant species is key to maintaining the physical structure of soils<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When looking at the theoretical foundations of \u201ccost-sensitive\u201d predictive models for data science, Manchester computer scientists found that twenty years of international research effort is called into question, and point the way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/cost-sensitive-boosting-algorithms-do-we-really-need-them\/\">a significantly more elegant solution<\/a>. Manchester mathematicians have found deep l<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/pure-dimension-and-projectivity-of-tropical-polytopes\/\">inks \u00a0between tropical mathematics and algebraic geometry<\/a>, with implications that will likely reverberate for decades in pure mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>My own field being Computer Science, I was pleased to see an elegant thread of activity enabling future computing devices.\u00a0 New superfast electronics will undoubtedly be inspired by two Manchester papers:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/high-electron-mobility-quantum-hall-effect-and-anomalous-optical-response-in-atomically-thin-inse\/\">using graphene as the foundation of future superfast electronics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/tuning-the-valley-and-chiral-quantum-state-of-dirac-electrons-in-van-der-waals-heterostructures\/\">promising speeds orders of magnitude beyond silicon chips<\/a>.\u00a0 New software compilation principles are introduced with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/scalable-task-parallelism-for-numa-a-uniform-abstraction-for-coordinated-scheduling-and-memory-management\/\">an award-winning approach to \u201cscalable task parallelism\u201d<\/a>, where software processes are automatically distributed across heterogeneous computing platforms, from mobile phones to supercomputers.<\/p>\n<p>And of course, underpinning all such future technology is the need for energy.\u00a0 Manchester is at the forefront of energy as a science. We have research which both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/on-the-adoption-of-carbon-dioxide-thermodynamic-cycles-for-nuclear-power-conversion-a-case-study-applied-to-mochovce-3-nuclear-power-plant\/\">makes nuclear reactors more efficient using carbon dioxide turbines<\/a>\u00a0and advances our understanding<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/in-abstract\/ferrihydrite-formation-the-role-of-fe13-keggin-clusters\/\"> how to clean up radioactive waste via analysis of ferrihydrite formation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, with no further ado, I leave you to your reading \u2013 I hope you find the same \u201cwow\u201d factor in these papers.
