The size of the smallest features possible is usually controlled by size of the ink drops produced. In this research, a new type of ink was developed which contains two different water-soluble polymer molecules which separate away from each other as the printed pattern dries. By using these new separating inks with an emerging high-resolution inkjet technology based on electrostatic attraction (\u201csuper inkjet\u201d), patterns less than 300 nm wide could be printed controllably.<\/p>\n<p>One of the components of the ink can initiate the growth of polymers from the surface, amplifying the ultra-high-resolution patterns into 3D features.\u00a0 The chemical functionality of the other components can also be varied, allowing the properties of the surface in between the features to be controlled. The process is applicable to a broad palette of useful polymers, allowing inkjet to simultaneously produce both ultra-precise patterning and control of surface chemistry, with wide-ranging potential applications.<\/p>\n<div class=\"abstract-box\">\n<ul>\n<li>The specially-designed polymers in the ink, known as <em>polyelectrolytes<\/em>, are highly charged long string-like molecules. Many natural molecules are in this same class, including DNA, RNA, and polysaccharides, giving broad scope to expand our technique.<\/li>\n<li>Surface-grown ultra-thin polymer coatings are known as polymer brushes.
