Novel measurements from the ATLAS experiment provide stringent tests of electroweak interactions<\/strong><\/p>\n

This research details the first observation of W bosons produced through a process known as weak boson fusion, and subsequent study of the properties of this process. This measurement was made studying data from high-energy proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider collected using the ATLAS detector.<\/p>\n

Such collisions typically result in particle interactions that allow tests of phenomena that are controlled by the strong force. However, particle interactions such as weak boson fusion, controlled purely by the electroweak force, have been predicted to occur – but are very rare. The use of novel analysis techniques to reliably identify candidate collision events and significantly reduce uncertainties associated with their measurement has allowed a University-of-Manchester-led team to observe purely-electroweak production of W bosons for the first time.<\/p>\n

Extensive measurements of the properties of such interactions, including the first differential cross-section measurements of any weak boson fusion process, provide stringent tests of long-standing predictions of this process. The work ushers in a new era of precision searches for unexpected phenomena resulting from interactions via the electroweak force. This research sets constraints on the models for these processes, including those that probe the mechanisms for the observed matter-anti-matter asymmetry in the Universe.<\/p>\n
