It would prove an illustrious career spanning not only maths, but education, politics and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her achievements are made all the more remarkable given the fact she was diagnosed as almost completely deaf at age eight. She didn&#8217;t receive her first hearing aid until she was 37; yet in the intervening years she would achieve some incredible things, and would continue doing so throughout her life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She lived until the age of 101 and would be instrumental in promoting education in Manchester throughout this time. Not only was she pivotal in driving the study of mathematics here at The University of Manchester, she also played important roles in the establishment of Manchester Polytechnic (now Manchester Metropolitan University) and the Royal Northern College of Music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This month marks five years since her passing; in recognition The Hub takes a look back at her remarkable life.
