Environmental Science student blogs about volunteering in Uganda
Social responsibility 8th September 2016
The day started with Solomon, one of S.A.L.V.E’s staff, setting a challenge that everyone makes a new friend today from a different country. A clever way to get the children in S.A.L.V.E.’s summer school and us UK volunteers communicating and connecting more fully.
Then was onto the sport days that was at the S.A.L.V.E land and it’s fair to say that all the UK volunteers underestimated how hard it is to do any sport in the burning heat of the 2pm African sun. Despite the sun we all put on our sun cream and got stuck into the sports. There was sack, space-hopper, three legged, wheelbarrow, 100m, egg and spoon and many other races. Even though many of the children didn’t quite understand the concept of teams or relay, with many switching teams halfway through races and many running in the same race several times, nothing beat the pure look of joy on the kid’s faces while they were running the races. Egg and spoon was a particular highlight for me, as the children soon caught on that they could run faster if they just held the bean bag egg on the spoon with one of their fingers!!
