{"id":1116,"date":"2018-06-21T11:16:23","date_gmt":"2018-06-21T10:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/?p=1116"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:26:56","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T08:26:56","slug":"one-small-step-for-man-one-giant-leap-for-manchester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2018\/06\/21\/one-small-step-for-man-one-giant-leap-for-manchester\/","title":{"rendered":"One small step for man, one giant leap for Manchester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like the plot of a movie, a team of students from across the Faculty of Science and Engineering have overcome some serious odds to claim victory at an international space probe competition in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cansatcompetition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Astronautical Society CanSat Competition<\/a> took place at Tarleton State University; with a team from The University of Manchester (one of only two UK universities represented) competing against students from around the world. More than 100 teams applied to take part; just 40 qualified for the final stage \u2013 and Manchester won.<\/p>\n<p>However, as teammates Iuliu-Cezar Ardelean (Aerospace MEng) and Lawrence France (Physics graduate and Aerospace MSc) admit, there was a time when it looked like they&#8217;d never get their design off the ground.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mission impossible<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1121\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_1121\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1121 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/06\/CanSatlayout2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"CanSat design\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/06\/CanSatlayout2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/06\/CanSatlayout2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/06\/CanSatlayout2-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/06\/CanSatlayout2.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_1121\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Designs showing how the heat shield and parachute would work<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>CanSat is organised by the American Astronautical Society and gives students the chance to see a complex space mission and engineering project through from the very start to the finish. This year, the challenge was to build a one-use space probe the size of a can, which had a heat shield and was capable of collecting data. Oh, and it also had to safely carry a chicken\u2019s egg up 725 metres from the ground and back down without so much as a crack.<\/p>\n<p>The 10-student team that tackled the challenge was made up of both Undergraduates and Postgraduates from the Schools of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mace.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering<\/a> (MACE), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eee.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Electrical and Electronic Engineering<\/a> (EEE), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.physics.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Physics and Astronomy<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Computer Science<\/a> \u2013 exactly the combined interdisciplinary knowledge you need to come up with a winning formula.<\/p>\n<p>But as we said, it wasn\u2019t quite as easy as that. In fact, the team was the last to qualify for the final in Texas \u2013 in spite of achieving a score of 95 per cent for their theoretical design. When some of the most knowledgeable science and engineering students in the world go head-to-head, the competition is fierce.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are taught to design but manufacturing these designs is the other part of the challenge.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Building the probe was also far from straightforward. As Lawrence, who is now studying for his Aerospace MSc, explains, a Physics Degree doesn\u2019t train you to solder. \u201cWe are taught to design but manufacturing these designs is the other part of the challenge. This project gives you the chance to learn those skills,\u201d he says. Iuliu agrees: \u201cA project like this provides an important opportunity to gain practical experience. The probe\u2019s circuit board was custom-made in EEE and the plastic framework was all 3D printed in MACE.<\/p>\n<p>The students taught themselves to solder and, piece by piece, made their completely novel space probe a reality. But this probe was no empty tin can &#8211; inside it contained a barometer, GPS, tilt sensor, an SD card, a real-time clock and a transmitter. Data collected from all these things had to be transmitted to the base and plotted by the team in real time.<\/p>\n<p>And this was just the start of the challenge \u2013 next the probe had to survive a test launch.<\/p>\n<p>In order to prepare, the team conducted two test launches \u2013 and both were a total disaster. Speaking of the first launch, Iuliu says: \u201cEverything that could go wrong, went wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second test launch didn\u2019t go much better. The probe failed to meet the correct altitude and then fell back to earth like a stone \u2013 no egg was going to survive that sort of landing. No matter what their discipline, everyone had to know how to do everything so that if one member fell ill or could no longer participate, the launch could still go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, after two failed test launches nothing more could go wrong \u2013 right? Wrong &#8211; the probe broke. Luckily, the team were now such confident engineers they were able to fix it \u2013 but launching it successfully was something they felt less confident about.<\/p>\n<p>In order to win, the team would need to launch the probe from a rocket to a height of 725m, from where it would need to rotate to a nose-down position. A micro-controller would then deploy the heat shield. Once at 300m above ground, the parachute would be released. And of course, it would need to bring home usable data, along with the all-important payload \u2013 the unbroken egg.<\/p>\n<p>It was no easy task &#8211; but they did it!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Everything about the launch was perfect<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cEverything about the launch was perfect,\u201d says Iuliu. \u201cThe audio beacon, the egg, the video footage \u2013 everything just went according to plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were so happy to recover the system,\u201d says Lawrence. \u201cWe scoured a field looking for it and when we found it, it was completely intact. The only damage was that a single rod had broken in the supporting structure and the trap door on the parachute hatch had come off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, a win was not yet in the bag. The team still had to present a mission debrief to a panel of judges that included representatives of NASA, Lockheed Martin and the US Naval Research Lab. At this stage, they had no idea they\u2019d won \u2013 although they\u2019d had a good landing, another team\u2019s may have been better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that point, you don\u2019t know how you\u2019ve done and want it to be perfect \u2013 and the judges said our presentation was the best,\u201d says Iuliu. In fact, the team scored an unprecedented 101 out of 100 due to their decision to kit the probe out with a camera \u2013 and the fact it successfully recorded video footage as it landed was the icing on the cake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A new challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/06\/CanSat-team-v2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"CanSat team with prize\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/06\/CanSat-team-v2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/06\/CanSat-team-v2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/06\/CanSat-team-v2-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The team is the first from the UK to win CanSat \u2013 but that\u2019s far from the end of this story.<\/p>\n<p>For one, there\u2019s next year\u2019s competition. The team are already looking into new sponsorship (getting ten science and engineering students from Manchester to the US isn\u2019t cheap), and will begin work on a new design once the 2019 challenge is announced later this summer. In the meantime, they continue to run their popular CanSat workshops, which provide leading STEM students with practical skills.<\/p>\n<p>The classes are based around the CanSat competition challenge and focused on space. Participants make their own simplified cansat and then compete against each other. Currently both The University of Manchester and the University of Bristol are involved, but Iuliu hopes it will expand to include many more universities. The bonus of a UK-based competition is that it\u2019s far more affordable and convenient for UK students to take part.<\/p>\n<p>If all of this isn\u2019t enough, the Manchester team also provide guidance to high school students competing in the Euro Space Agency CanSat competition. And they all still have their Undergraduate and Master\u2019s Degrees to complete.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on his team\u2019s victory, Iuliu says: \u201cI\u2019m really happy to have won and for more people to hear about this.
