But there\u2019s no need to run for higher ground quite yet \u2013 while fireball events aren\u2019t always caught on camera, they are fairly common.<\/p>\n<p>In the last month alone, a brand new meteor camera located here on The University of Manchester\u2019s north campus has recorded two fireballs. The new meteor observation all sky view camera forms part of the System for Capture of Asteroid and Meteorite Paths (SCAMP), and captures a 360-degree view of the skies over the city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthandsolarsystem.wordpress.com\/\">The project<\/a> is being overseen by Drs Andrew Smedley (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maths.manchester.ac.uk\/\">School of Mathematics<\/a>) and Katherine Joy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sees.manchester.ac.uk\/\">School of Earth and Environmental Science &#8211; SEES<\/a>), in collaboration with the camera\u2019s owner &#8211; Dr Ashley King (Natural History Museum, London). The camera captures a view of the night sky every 1.25 seconds \u2013 because when you\u2019re looking for astronomical events, a lot can change from millisecond to millisecond.<\/p>\n<h2>We have a hit!<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1186\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/08\/Fireball-3.jpg\" alt=\"fireball, meteorite\" width=\"903\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/08\/Fireball-3.jpg 903w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/08\/Fireball-3-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/08\/Fireball-3-768x430.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 903px) 100vw, 903px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Within just weeks of installation, the SEES Isotope Group got a hit. In mid-July, a fireball event was captured by the camera \u2013 and the fact it was also picked up in other parts of the UK confirmed the sighting.<\/p>\n<p>Just a week later, another fireball event was recorded. Working with other teams across the UK, the group will now calculate whether a meteorite was delivered to Earth, and where it landed.<\/p>\n<p>You may wonder what\u2019s so exciting about finding a new lump of space rock. But studying new meteorites can offer an unparalleled insight into the history and evolution of the Solar System \u2013 as a team from SEES recently discovered.<\/p>\n<h2>Holy carbonaceous chondrites, Batman!<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1187\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_1187\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1187\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/08\/Meteorite-scan.jpg\" alt=\"meteorite scan\" width=\"772\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/08\/Meteorite-scan.jpg 772w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/08\/Meteorite-scan-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/08\/Meteorite-scan-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 772px) 100vw, 772px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_1187\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scan of moon meteorite<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dr Romain Tart\u00e8se recently led a team of researchers in examining the organic matter found within carbonaceous chondrites \u2013 meteorites that have come from asteroids as old as the Solar System itself. They are made up of the solid matter that existed at the birth of the Solar System, including rock, dust, water ice and organics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChondrites are a snapshot of the early Solar System, providing key insights on how protoplanets and planets formed and were processed,\u201d explains Dr Tart\u00e8se. Because Earth is a dynamic planet \u2013 meaning that it is constantly changing thanks to processes like erosion and plate tectonics \u2013 meteorites can actually provide a clearer understanding of how the Earth evolved.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Tart\u00e8se\u2019s research is just part of the on-going work of the SEE Isotope Group. Elsewhere, the group has been working with the&nbsp;Henry Moseley X-ray Imaging Facility to produce CT scans of meteorites. This helps the scientists to understand the mineral makeup and internal structure of the rocks. &nbsp;The Group hopes the new all skies meteor camera will now assist them in identifying fireball events that result in new meteorites being found in the UK.<\/p>\n<h2>Manchester\u2019s eye on the sky<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/12\/Godlee-4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/12\/Godlee-4-1.jpg 499w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/12\/Godlee-4-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/12\/Godlee-4-1-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The new camera is not the only thing keeping a keen eye on the sky. Also on North Campus, tucked away at the very top of Sackville Street Building, a team of astronomers have had their gaze fixed on the heavens for more than a century.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath the rotating paper dome of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2017\/12\/07\/godlee-observatory-sackville-streets-best-kept-secret\/\">Godlee Observatory<\/a>, two telescopes have allowed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manastro.co.uk\/\">Manchester Astronomical Society<\/a> to make important observations since 1902. Through these telescopes, you can see all the way to Pluto.<\/p>\n<p>But meteoritics isn\u2019t all about sitting around looking through telescopes or examining film footage. Later in the year, two teams from SEES and the School of Maths will be heading to Antarctica to search and recover meteorites in the south polar mountains. And while the reason for the SEES researchers attending is obvious, you may wonder why Antarctica is of interest to our mathematicians.<\/p>\n<p>The team are hoping to prove correct their hypothesis that there is a layer of meteorites hidden below the icy surface of Antarctica. Applied mathematics has been used to develop a model that suggests iron-rich meteorites remain hidden beneath the ice because they melt faster than the rate of the ice moving upwards.
