The Cockcroft Laboratory was named after the scientist who opened it \u2013 Sir John Cockcroft. He studied mathematics here at Manchester University and returned to the city to study electrical engineering after serving in the First World War.<\/p>\n<p>In 1951, Sir John was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for the pioneering work he and Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton conducted on the transmutation of atomic nuclei by artificially accelerated atomic particles. So, who better to open a facility where electrical experiments could be conducted on a massive scale?<\/p>\n<h2>Bright sparks<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/10\/HV-lab-3.jpg\" alt=\"high voltage lab\" width=\"960\" height=\"955\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/10\/HV-lab-3.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/10\/HV-lab-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/10\/HV-lab-3-300x298.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/10\/HV-lab-3-768x764.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Today, the National Grid Power Systems Research Centre not only houses the largest academic high voltage facility in the UK. It\u2019s also the country\u2019s only location for scientists and engineers to undertake work at a scale suitable for 275kV and 400kV power systems.<\/p>\n<p>To enter the HV Lab is a little like stepping on to the set of a Stanley Kubrick movie. The equipment is huge and futuristic, and when the lights dip and the sparks fly at the start of an experiment, you may even feel your hair stand on end.<\/p>\n<p>However, the lab is as much about \u2018tell\u2019 as it is \u2018show\u2019. The work done here is committed to ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply system that meets a growing need, while also minimising environmental impact. Sound impossible? That\u2019s why it\u2019s called a \u2018global challenge\u2019!<\/p>\n<p>Much of the work is carried out by researchers and academics at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eee.manchester.ac.uk\/\">School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering<\/a>, but the research they do is supported by industry, the UK government and the EU.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t study on a small scale, but purposeful research on a global-scale. Having said all that, there\u2019s always time to blow up a drone!<\/p>\n<h2>Drone vs lightning<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1301\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/10\/HV-Lab-1.jpg\" alt=\"high voltage lab\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/10\/HV-Lab-1.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/10\/HV-Lab-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ever wondered whether a drone could survive a lightning strike? It\u2019s not such a crazy question if you want to get that perfect aerial shot when a storm turns the sky black \u2013 and it\u2019s a question YouTube filmmaker Tom Scott wanted to answer when he paid a visit to the HV lab in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Well, as it turns out a drone is just as fallible to electricity as us mere mortals \u2013 and the drones that our engineers shocked with over 1 million volts of electricity generated by a 2 MV impulse generator did not live to fly again. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2017\/04\/10\/drone-vs-lightning\/\">read more about the experiment here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The future<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1302\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/10\/HV-lab-4.jpg\" alt=\"high voltage lab\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/10\/HV-lab-4.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/10\/HV-lab-4-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not far from the current HV Lab, work is underway to construct a brand new home for engineers at The University of Manchester. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2018\/09\/25\/mecd-the-clever-new-kid-on-the-block\/\">Manchester Engineering Campus Development<\/a> will measure the same size as 11 football pitches once finished, and the new HV Lab will be one of its most eye-catching features.<\/p>\n<p>Through huge windows, passers-by will be able to admire for themselves the brand new EPSRC-funded \u00a31.85 million test equipment installed earlier this year.
