One day later, its inhabitants, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, stepped out of the craft on to the lunar surface. It was the first time humans had ever left the boundaries of our home planet and set foot on a celestial body.<\/p>\n<h3>Eavesdropping on history<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-uom-post-size wp-image-2077\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2019\/07\/Bluedot-3-768x494.jpg\" alt=\"Bluedot stage Lovell telescope\" width=\"768\" height=\"494\"><\/p>\n<p>Back on Earth, the historic event was tracked at Jodrell Bank by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2019\/07\/17\/the-name-behind-the-telescope-sir-bernard-lovell\/\">radio astronomer Bernard Lovell<\/a> and his team, including engineer Bob Pritchard. They listened as the Apollo 11 orbited the Earth; as it reached the Moon; as the Eagle lunar module uncoupled from the Columbia spacecraft and made its rapid descent; as Neil Armstrong took that historic first step. They also listened in as the Lunar 15 \u2013 an unmanned craft launched by the Soviet Union \u2013 crashed into the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>Across the UK, people gathered around their TV sets \u2013 or knocked on neighbours\u2019 doors if they didn\u2019t own a set themselves. They stayed up into the early hours as broadcaster James Burke commentated the first blurry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2019\/06\/13\/were-flying-to-the-moon-and-itll-be-sooner-than-you-think\/\">images of the Moon<\/a> that beamed into their TV sets.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2076\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_2076\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-uom-post-size wp-image-2076\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2019\/07\/Bluedot-4-768x494.jpg\" alt=\"Men talking on stage\" width=\"768\" height=\"494\"><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_2076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dallas Campbell and James Burke<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fifty years later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2019\/07\/11\/3-cheers-for-jodrell-bank-the-uks-newest-unesco-site\/\">Jodrell Bank<\/a> is once again abuzz with energy. James Burke is here (pictured above), reminiscing to TV presenter Dallas Campbell about his role as the face and voice of the Moon landing. A day later, Bob Pritchard sits down with Professor Tim O\u2019Brien, Associate Physicist of Jodrell Bank, to chat about what it was like to be part of the team that listened in on the historic event.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the shadow of the mighty Lovell Telescope, people gather together to mark the occasion. The huge radio telescope has been lit up with confetti-like projections created by Illuminos. Bluedot Festival has brought people together from across the UK \u2013 and further afield too \u2013 to revel in a unique mix of science and the arts, and to mark the 50<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary of the Apollo Moon landings.<\/p>\n<h3>Where science and art collide<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-uom-post-size wp-image-2078\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2019\/07\/Bluedot-2-768x494.jpg\" alt=\"Costumed dancers\" width=\"768\" height=\"494\"><\/p>\n<p>Bluedot is a truly unique festival. It\u2019s the only one to take place at an observatory for starters \u2013 and a UNESCO World Heritage site to boot. Here punters can find out more about Graphene, take a ride in a flight simulator, hear a talk by Helen Sharman, the first British astronaut, and then dance to Hot Chip and Kraftwerk as the sun sets.<\/p>\n<p>And never has there been a bigger reason to party than on the occasion of the Apollo anniversary. There are full Moon parties, a colossal Moon sculpture (<em>Museum of the Moon<\/em> by Luke Jerram), and a nightly \u2018Moon Walk\u2019 carnival with singing, dancing and flaming bats(!).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-uom-post-size wp-image-2079\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2019\/07\/Bluedot-5-768x494.jpg\" alt=\"Child looking at glove box with woman scientist\" width=\"768\" height=\"494\"><\/p>\n<p>As if all this isn\u2019t enough, there\u2019s plenty to excite young gig-goers too. For starters, there\u2019s another very important 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary to celebrate this year \u2013 that of the Clangers, now back on <em>CBeebies <\/em>and voiced by Michael Palin. An Aardman Animation workshop, where families are invited to try their hand crafting those other famous lunar explorers \u2013 Wallace and Gromit \u2013 out of clay is another hit.<\/p>\n<p>Over in the Mission Control tent, the thrilling work of The University of Manchester and its research institutes is firmly on display. Visitors can find out how their menu choices affected the climate over at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2019\/07\/03\/a-moment-on-the-lips-a-lifetime-off-the-planet\/\">Take A Bite Out of Climate Change<\/a> stand, before sampling some \u2018disco chocolate\u2019 courtesy of the Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials.<\/p>\n<p>All of this is indoors \u2013 which is great news, as the weather hasn\u2019t been kind to Bluedot-goers. On the flip side, walking through endless thick mud does provide an insight into how those astronauts felt walking in their 180lb space suits.<\/p>\n<h3>Together on a floating blue dot<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-uom-post-size wp-image-2080 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2019\/07\/Bluedot-1-768x494.jpg\" alt=\"Nighttime space parade\" width=\"768\" height=\"494\"><\/p>\n<p>Only in its fourth year, Bluedot gets its name from a Voyager 1 photograph in which Earth is a tiny blue dot in a vast sea of space. But isolation is the last feeling you experience at Bluedot. Here, thousands of people are united in their love of science, engineering and art. Three disciplines, often thought of as incompatible, in fact complement each other in myriad ways.<\/p>\n<p>And 50 years since the release of <em>Space Oddity<\/em>, try telling David Bowie that space and rock music don\u2019t mix!<\/p>\n<p>Missed out on Bluedot this year?
