COVID-19 has impacted our lives immeasurably &#8211; and could do for some time more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But out of a crisis often comes innovation, new ways of doing things and a determination to make things better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This has certainly been evident here in the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), and a number of our leading experts have lent their voices to the University&#8217;s research beacons <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/research\/beacons\/covid-catalysts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">COVID Catalysts campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a collection of flash lectures demonstrating how the virus can act as a catalyst for positive change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let&#8217;s meet them&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Energy<\/h2>\n<h3>Professor Alice Larkin<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3195\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2020\/10\/CovidCatalysts_LarkinAlice-600x320-1.jpg\" alt=\"Prof Alice Larkin\" width=\"600\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2020\/10\/CovidCatalysts_LarkinAlice-600x320-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2020\/10\/CovidCatalysts_LarkinAlice-600x320-1-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.research.manchester.ac.uk\/portal\/en\/researchers\/alice-larkin(4bde3e39-ab56-452d-ac64-c231c23b6c92).html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Professor Alice Larkin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is Head of the School of Engineering and Professor of Climate Science and Energy Policy. In her lecture she considers how we might use our lessons from lockdown to transform our energy systems and, ultimately, help tackle climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She asks: &#8220;Can decision-makers direct investment that we now know can be made available towards regional and nationwide rapid and radical interventions? In this lecture he looks at how materials such as graphene can not only lead to a more sustainable world, but prove how quickly research can be turned into products and applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The COVID-19 pandemic has demanded a faster journey from idea to reality &#8211; a model of innovation already championed at Manchester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;If it fails, fail fast and learn, move on and rapidly innovate to go forward,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;Overall, I&#8217;m seeing some real challenges post-COVID. The future is green and clean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;We need to make sure that we&#8217;re at the forefront of this biotechnology innovation and implementation revolution as we go forward &#8211; and Manchester is very well placed to take that step to replace some of the more conventional industries that Manchester has been well known for over the
