{"id":3913,"date":"2021-06-10T11:16:51","date_gmt":"2021-06-10T10:16:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/?p=3913"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:19:16","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T08:19:16","slug":"soaring-with-spacex-uom-launches-first-ever-satellite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2021\/06\/10\/soaring-with-spacex-uom-launches-first-ever-satellite\/","title":{"rendered":"SOARing with SpaceX: UoM launches first-ever satellite"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here at Manchester we&#8217;re used to reaching for the stars, but this time we&#8217;ve gone one step further &#8211; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/discover\/news\/manchester-scientists-to-launch-low-orbiting-satellite-on-spacex-mission\/\">launched our very own satellite<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Aiming to revolutionise Earth observation satellites, <a href=\"https:\/\/discoverer.space\/\">DISCOVERER<\/a> is a \u20ac5.7 million project &#8211; led by The University of Manchester, in collaboration with, among others, Nanoracks, the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at University College London, and GOMSpace &#8211; that truly is out of this world.<\/p>\n<p>Or, to be more precise, in very low Earth orbit (VLEO).<\/p>\n<p>The groundbreaking research seeks to develop technologies that will better enable VLEO, and produce satellites that are smaller, lighter, and more cost-efficient.<\/p>\n<p>And last week, on 3 June at 6.29pm BST, the <a href=\"https:\/\/discoverer.space\/soar-satellite-for-orbital-aerodynamics-research\/\">Satellite for Orbital Aerodynamics Research (SOAR)<\/a> &#8211; a 3U CubeSat launched on SpaceX&#8217;s CRS-22 mission &#8211; finally had lift off&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3916\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_3916\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3916 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/06\/SpaceX-CubeSat-cropped.jpg\" alt=\"Cubesat orbit visualisation\" width=\"768\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/06\/SpaceX-CubeSat-cropped.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/06\/SpaceX-CubeSat-cropped-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_3916\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A visualisation of the CubeSat orbit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Breaking new ground<\/h2>\n<p>The mission launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and headed to the International Space Station. From there, SOAR will be deployed into orbit. A team at Manchester will then control the satellite from the ground &#8211; right here on campus.<\/p>\n<p>It might all sound like something from Star Wars, but it&#8217;s what the project could achieve that&#8217;s providing A New Hope for researchers. Once in orbit, the satellite will get to work &#8211; studying the residual atmosphere and associated gas-surface interactions in VLEO.<\/p>\n<p>Data received from SOAR will then be used for various purposes, including the study of interactions between the residual atmosphere in low orbits, and the study of new materials &#8211; developed here at the University &#8211; that could lead to both drag reduction and an increase in aerodynamic performance.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.research.manchester.ac.uk\/portal\/en\/researchers\/peter-roberts(1da71875-0c36-40c5-80ff-a6dd3949d847).html\">Dr Peter Roberts<\/a>, Scientific Coordinator for DISCOVERER and a Reader in Spacecraft Engineering in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mace.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering<\/a>, notes: &#8220;The satellite represents the culmination of a huge amount of technology development over many years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re breaking new ground with a satellite designed specifically to explore aerodynamic effects in very low Earth orbits, whilst simultaneously measuring atmospheric parameters such as density and composition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zQOzqJ3-aYY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Avoiding &#8216;space junk&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>But why is VLEO so important?<\/p>\n<p>One reason is the intriguing, yet very considerable, problem of orbital debris. According to NASA, more than 27,000 pieces of orbital debris &#8211; or &#8216;space junk&#8217; &#8211; are tracked by the US Department of Defense&#8217;s global Space Surveillance Network sensors.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike natural meteoroids (which we recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2021\/04\/13\/great-balls-of-fire-can-meteorites-reveal-the-secrets-of-our-solar-system\/\">looked at here on The Hub<\/a>), orbital debris is classified as any human-made object, in orbit about the Earth, that no longer serves a useful function. And&#8230; there&#8217;s a lot of it. In fact, there exists around half a million pieces of at-least-marble-sized debris out there.<\/p>\n<p>This debris poses a very real threat &#8211; to both human spaceflight and robotic missions. Due to the speed at which it travels, even the smallest pieces of debris can cause significant damage to a spacecraft; a tiny fleck of paint, for example, can make its mark when moving at high velocity.<\/p>\n<p>Orbiting much closer to Earth, however, can markedly decrease this risk. Importantly, it can also increase the quality of images transmitted back to us.<\/p>\n<h2>Looking to the sky<\/h2>\n<p>The SOAR satellite features a remarkable set of fins, coated with four different materials, that can individually rotate to different angles.
