A mysterious green-and-white structure on its roof? Or an arresting man-in-a-bath sculpture close by?<\/p>\n<p>With many staff and students (finally!) returning to campus \u2013 and some heading here for the very first time \u2013 what better way to get reacquainted with North Campus than to take a closer look at some of its more, shall we say, <em>curious<\/em> features?<\/p>\n<p>North Campus is home not only to much activity within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.se.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Faculty of Science and Engineering<\/a>, but also the truly weird and wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of our favourite features\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>Eureka! It&#8217;s Archimedes!<\/h2>\n<p>If you head beneath the railway arches that divide North Campus you&#8217;ll encounter a striking figure that \u2013 quite literally \u2013 leaps out at you. Sculpted by Thompson Dagnall and unveiled back in 1990, the stone man, bald, naked and euphoric, is none other than ancient Greek mathematician, philosopher and inventor Archimedes.<\/p>\n<p>The sculpture represents his &#8216;Eureka!&#8217; moment, when he jumped out of the bath upon discovering the principles of buoyancy.<\/p>\n<p>Check out our short video to find out more:<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iGvjEnSZjbg?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>This most excellent canopy<\/h2>\n<p>Atop Sackville Street Building sits an unexpected sight \u2013 an intriguing dome with, it turns out, a fascinating history. It is, of course, the beautiful Godlee Observatory, a true <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2017\/12\/07\/godlee-observatory-sackville-streets-best-kept-secret\/\">window to the stars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bequeathed to the people of Manchester by businessman and philanthropist Francis Godlee in 1903, the observatory features a spiral staircase, trap door, and dome made from papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9! It has been a feature of the city&#8217;s skyline for well over a century \u2013 and even played a part in putting man on the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>Discover the incredible story in our short video:<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IwhMm1Jn5Ic?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Cheeky Vimto<\/h2>\n<p>Here in Manchester we love a little drink of Vimto\u2026 but why is there an absolutely massive bottle of the stuff next to Sackville Street Building?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is pretty simple: the drink was first created close to the site back in 1908 by John Noel Nichols, a wholesaler of herbs, spices and medicines. The purple drink has been a favourite in the city \u2013 and all around the world \u2013 ever since.
