No, but it could make bricks \u2013 on Mars!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Housing here on Earth can seem expensive enough, but on Mars? Well, it would be <em>astronomical<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it&#8217;s estimated that to transport a single brick to Mars would cost in excess of \u00a31 million.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/discover\/news\/affordable-housing-in-outer-space-scientists-develop-cosmic-concrete-from-space-dust-and-astronaut-blood\/\">New research<\/a> involving scientists from The University of Manchester, however, has proposed a very different, much cheaper way of getting building materials to other planets \u2013 and it involves a lot of blood, sweat and tears.<\/p>\n<p>Quite literally.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4142\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/10\/Space-bricks.jpg\" alt=\"Space brick from the research\" width=\"768\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/10\/Space-bricks.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/10\/Space-bricks-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Blood-curdling research<\/h2>\n<p>As the old saying goes, you can&#8217;t get blood from a stone \u2013 but can the same be said for bricks? According to the research, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2590006421000442#!\">Materials Today Bio<\/a>, perhaps not.<\/p>\n<p>And the concept, explains Dr Aled Roberts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mib.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Manchester Institute of Biotechnology<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chemistry.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Department of Chemistry<\/a>, is &#8220;literally blood-curdling&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Step (or space walk) forward: the astronauts themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers demonstrated that human serum albumin, a common protein from blood plasma, can help to bind simulated Moon or Mars dust in order to create AstroCrete \u2013 a novel concrete-like material.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, the compressive strength of the material could be boosted by more than 300% with the incorporation of urea, a biological waste product excreted through \u2013 yep, you guessed it \u2013 urine (and sweat and tears).<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A new way to make space bricks.\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S1lUzGqw8Cw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Scientists have been trying to develop viable technologies to produce concrete-like materials on the surface of Mars, but we never stopped to think that the answer might be inside us all along&#8221;, Dr Roberts notes.<\/p>\n<p>A crew of six astronauts could, in theory, produce more than 500kg of AstroCrete during a two-year mission on Mars. Each crew member could produce enough of the high-strength material to expand the habitat to support an extra crew member \u2013 and each successive mission could then double the amount of housing available.<\/p>\n<p>It might all sound very futuristic, but the idea of using blood for building materials is anything but. Indeed, back in medieval times animal blood was often used as a binder for mortar.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Roberts adds: &#8220;It is exciting that a major challenge of the space age may have found its solution based on inspirations from medieval technology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Back to Earth<\/h2>\n<p>The results are not only promising for life in outer space, but also back here on Earth &#8211; especially as we strive for a greener future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the great things about researching for space-based applications is generally the technology will trickle down and have Earth-based applications&#8221;, Dr Roberts shares.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any kind of colony on the Moon and Mars has to be hyper-resourceful, completely circular; you can&#8217;t have any waste, you&#8217;ve got to recycle everything. And that kind of extreme recycling, circular mentality will have potentially positive impacts on the Earth&#8217;s economy, as we move towards more sustainability and circularity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So\u2026 might we ever step foot on Mars? Will we ever live there?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to say.
