Following a COVID-enforced break last year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.se.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Faculty of Science and Engineering&#8217;s<\/a> flagship public engagement event \u2013 which aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers \u2013 made a triumphant comeback last week, attracting more than 5,000 wide-eyed visitors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4196\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/11\/ScienceX-4.jpg\" alt=\"Child with remote control\" width=\"768\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/11\/ScienceX-4.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/11\/ScienceX-4-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Science for all<\/h2>\n<p>The weekend-long pop-up festival does a brilliant job of introducing young people to the wonders of science and engineering \u2013 including those who might otherwise avoid the subjects, and especially those yet to consider a future in them.<\/p>\n<p>And this year&#8217;s was a special edition, with a particular focus on climate change, sustainability and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Staged for the first time at the magnificent Central Library, right in the heart of Manchester city centre, the free event centred on 13 absorbing, interactive activities, aiming to celebrate and highlight all things green.<\/p>\n<p>From building electric car motors to designing plants that can survive in different environments, from learning about climate-friendly diets to making DNA bracelets and paper, ScienceX 2021 had it all.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4197\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/11\/ScienceX-1.jpg\" alt=\"Child with a blow-up globe\" width=\"768\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/11\/ScienceX-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/11\/ScienceX-1-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Enacting positive change<\/h2>\n<p>Visitors were encouraged to make their own climate pledges \u2013 ensuring their commitment to positive change continues long after the exhibitions were dismantled and packed away.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, a range of online activities are also available on the brand-new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/sciencex\/\">ScienceX website<\/a>, which offers a raft of information on everything from volcanoes to dinosaurs, advanced materials to energy and fast fashion, and much, much more.<\/p>\n<p>Available until later this month (November 25), it&#8217;s the perfect resource for both those wanting to learn more, and those unable to attend in person.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4198\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/11\/ScienceX-3.jpg\" alt=\"Adult volunteer reads to children\" width=\"768\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/11\/ScienceX-3.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2021\/11\/ScienceX-3-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Going green<\/h2>\n<p>A small army of more than 100 staff and student volunteers helped to deliver the event, and they \u2013 and the organisers \u2013 were keen to walk the walk, not just talk the talk.<\/p>\n<p>They donned organic cotton ScienceX t-shirts that were reused from previous events, and travelled by public transport or car-shared where possible.
