{"id":451,"date":"2017-07-07T16:08:16","date_gmt":"2017-07-07T15:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/?p=451"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:30:00","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T08:30:00","slug":"game-set-match-graphene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2017\/07\/07\/game-set-match-graphene\/","title":{"rendered":"Game, set and match to graphene"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With Wimbledon in full swing, it\u2019s yet to be decided who\u2019ll meet on Centre Court for the final \u2013 but it\u2019s clear that centre stage belongs to graphene.<\/p>\n<p>Many of this year\u2019s players at the world-famous event will be carrying racquets that have been reinforced with the advanced material \u2013 including Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. In fact, tennis racquets are among the sporting equipment most suited for enhancement by graphene, as the material is just a single atom thick \u2013 one million times thinner than a human hair.<\/p>\n<p>Graphene might be small, but there\u2019s nothing weak about it. The material is stronger than steel, but because it\u2019s so tiny it\u2019s also flexible and lightweight. All of this means it\u2019s perfect for reinforcing tennis racquets.<\/p>\n<p>By integrating graphene into the tennis racquet\u2019s frame, it creates the optimal weight distribution. This allows players to swing the racquet faster and hit the ball with more power. The unique attributes of graphene mean that while it\u2019s stronger, it\u2019s also lighter. Strength and speed make for a powerful combination when you\u2019re on court.<\/p>\n<h2>Good sport<\/h2>\n<p>Professor Robert Young from The University of Manchester says: \u201cGraphene, first isolated in Manchester, is a very light and strong material that makes it ideal for use in a wide range of sporting goods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it doesn\u2019t stop there. Professor Young notes they the material is also being used to improve skis and hockey sticks. Even cycling is getting a graphene boost, with both cycle frames and tyres that use graphene to enhance the carbon fibre and racing tyres respectively currently in development.<\/p>\n<p>We may soon be seeing graphene across all sporting fields. For example, it could be used to create a stronger shell for sports cars. If successful, it may not be long before we\u2019re seeing graphene-enhanced Formula One cars racing round the track.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/06\/Graphene_dress-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/06\/Graphene_dress-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/06\/Graphene_dress-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/06\/Graphene_dress-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/06\/Graphene_dress.jpg 1098w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The problem solver<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to believe that it\u2019s little more than ten years since graphene was isolated by University of Manchester professors Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov, who went on to be awarded the Nobel Prize for their discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the potential applications and developments of the 2D material have ranged from the energy sector to fashion (see the photo of our graphene dress for an example). It may even hold the key to providing clean drinking water for the global population.<\/p>\n<p>In April, researchers at The University of Manchester announced that there is the potential to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/latest\/?archive=twelvemonths&amp;id=18158\">graphene to create a sieve<\/a> that can remove the salt from seawater, thereby making it safe to drink.
