These bricks could then be used to build structures on the moon and Mars as part of future space exploration &#8211; indeed, we covered the research in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2021\/10\/07\/blood-from-a-stone-no-but-it-could-make-bricks-on-mars\/\">a blogpost last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, in order to get a more in-depth explanation, Kory and Enna caught up with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aleddeakin\">Dr Aled Roberts<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mib.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Manchester Institute of Biotechnology<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chemistry.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Department of Chemistry<\/a>, who explains the theory, and the practical considerations, behind the blood-curdling proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any future long-term planetary exploration would require buildings with exceptionally thick walls, to protect astronauts from the effects of solar radiation. When you consider that the cost of transporting a single brick to Mars can cost more than a million British pounds, the future construction of a Martian colony could seem prohibitively expensive.
