{"id":5216,"date":"2023-02-09T15:06:52","date_gmt":"2023-02-09T15:06:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/?p=5216"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:15:16","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T08:15:16","slug":"iran-to-manchester-via-disney-creating-magic-as-a-woman-in-computer-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2023\/02\/09\/iran-to-manchester-via-disney-creating-magic-as-a-woman-in-computer-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran to Manchester, via Disney: Creating magic as a woman in computer science"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty fun when I tell little kids that I work at Disney, and I&#8217;m also a computer scientist,\u201d says Dr Zahra Montazeri, a lecturer in graphics and virtual environ in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Department of Computer Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can see the sparkle in their eyes!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zahra\u2019s time at the much-loved, world-famous entertainment company was fun, rewarding and eye-opening \u2013 and just one chapter of a remarkable story that has taken her from Iran to the US, and now to Manchester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A story we wanted to profile for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/women-and-girls-in-science-day\">International Day of Women and Girls in Science<\/a> \u2013 taking place on 11 February and celebrating \u2018IDEAS: Innovate. Demonstrate. Elevate. Advance. Sustain.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-container\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6jUdC9X2Gsc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keeping it real<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Zahra, who arrived at Manchester a little over a year ago, specialises in computer graphics and the virtual environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we do is all about making photorealistic rendering,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt means that when you watch a movie or a game it looks realistic, and that&#8217;s because of all the physics behind it. So, it\u2019s called physics-based rendering and that&#8217;s all about bringing realism into the virtual world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her passion for computer science \u2013 and, more specifically, computer graphics \u2013 can be traced back to high school. There, she loved art, painting and other creative pursuits, but was also intrigued by the problem-solving and programming elements of computer science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Computer graphics, she found, offered an intersection between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would take her to Disney, and beyond\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where dreams come true<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First, she undertook an internship at DreamWorks, the animation studio famous for releasing huge movie hits including Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon and, the year after, completed another internship \u2013 this time at Pixar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known across the globe, Pixar has given us animation favourites such as Toy Story, Up, and Monsters, Inc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zahra eventually landed at Disney: &#8216;The place where dreams come true!\u2019 She joined ILM after completing her PhD, and prior to her journey back to academia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ILM is part of the Disney family \u2013 where Star Wars is created. Most recently, and during her current role at Manchester, she collaborated with Disney Research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly for Zahra, these placements meant she was able to spread joy through her work. \u201cI&#8217;m proud of it because I believe if you make entertainment more appealing to people, it makes, ultimately, everyone happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a computer scientist, this is my contribution to science \u2013 by improving the realism of the virtual world, such as the metaverse. The pleasure of working at major entertainment industries helps me to indirectly contribute to people&#8217;s happiness, which is my ultimate goal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2023\/02\/Zahra-2-Pixar-cropped.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Zahra Montazeri leaps into the air next to a large Pixar lamp and ball.\" class=\"wp-image-5219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2023\/02\/Zahra-2-Pixar-cropped.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2023\/02\/Zahra-2-Pixar-cropped-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A close connection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The path her career has taken \u2013 from academia to industry and back to academia again, here at Manchester \u2013 has brought, and continues to bring, unique benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorking in industry and bringing it back to academia, it&#8217;s actually a very interactive connection because what you see as a cutting-edge technology being used in production, you can bring it up into the classroom and in the lecture halls. It makes your lectures up to date.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, of course, it works the other way too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI get to read a lot of papers in academia and then I bring it back to industry. I work as a consultant with Disney Research, where I explore the latest related papers from academic journals to be in the production industry as well. So, it&#8217;s a very close connection back and forth between these two.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making a positive change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Zahra, who moved to Manchester with her husband, a fellow academic, says she\u2019s very happy with how the latest scene in the movie of her life is unfolding. \u201cSo far so good. We love Manchester!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, what is it like as a woman in computer science?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOf course, studying computer science for women is quite challenging. And for me, as an Iranian Muslim wearing a hijab, I do have enough to be excluded from a lot of communities and you can&#8217;t ever ignore it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is always hard to be kind of a minority wherever you are. But it just drove me to embrace the challenge and use my minority as a power to make a change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The importance of positive role models is something Zahra is keen to stress. \u201cSo, for myself, honestly, I had one female professor at school in Iran who encouraged me to be brave and confident, opened up the whole opportunity to me to start, to apply for my PhD, to study, and to even consider being a successful woman. She was an inspiring figure for me, and I would always owe my success to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope I would do the same. I would repay the debt of gratitude for those who would look up to me maybe in future. As women in computer science, we don&#8217;t have any ceiling effect. So, we can grow if we want, we can stretch out of our boundaries, step out of our comfort zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd I want to do what my teachers have done for me. And I wouldn&#8217;t sit here if it wasn&#8217;t because of them. So, I want to be inspiring, hopefully, for the future, for the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;You can do anything in the world\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What, then, does she think makes computer science appealing to young people today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s all about problem solving, engineering, and science behind the computer. So, it&#8217;s pretty fun. I love it. I recommend it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I do on a day-to-day basis in my research is all about, not necessarily graphic as a painting or drawing, but the physics behind the art. So, we make the art using computers. It&#8217;s how you make art in virtual life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cComputer science is a broad field, and you can do creative stuff with the tools that you learn. Having programming as a tool, you can do anything in the world. And that&#8217;s a very powerful skillset.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Powerful indeed. Enough, perhaps, to create a little magic\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To bring happiness to children \u2013 and a sparkle to their
