{"id":5330,"date":"2023-03-23T10:09:35","date_gmt":"2023-03-23T10:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/?p=5330"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:15:15","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T08:15:15","slug":"one-small-step-for-a-dinosaur-one-giant-leap-for-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2023\/03\/23\/one-small-step-for-a-dinosaur-one-giant-leap-for-scientists\/","title":{"rendered":"One small step for a dinosaur; one giant leap for scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A small step taken by a giant dinosaur hundreds of millions of years ago could provide huge clues for scientists researching their behaviour today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a ginormous footprint \u2013 the largest-ever of its kind spotted in Yorkshire, renowned for its incredible fossil and footprint finds \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/discover\/news\/giant-meat-eating-dinosaur-footprint-is-largest-found-in-yorkshire\/\">has been discovered<\/a> along \u2018Dinosaur Coast\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers including Dr Dean Lomax, a palaeontologist at The University of Manchester, are excited to see what the print can teach us\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2023\/03\/Dino-footprint-768x400-1.jpg\" alt=\"Image of the discovered dinosaur footprint.\" class=\"wp-image-5334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2023\/03\/Dino-footprint-768x400-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2023\/03\/Dino-footprint-768x400-1-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption>Copyright: Marie Woods<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding your feet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a wonderful find,\u201d Dr Lomax enthuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot only does this specimen represent the largest theropod footprint found in Yorkshire, but by studying the angle of the footprint, its shape, and the impressions of the claws, the fossil provides insights into the behaviour of this individual from around 166 million years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theropod means \u2018beast-footed\u2019 and refers to any member of the dinosaur subgroup Theropoda, which includes all meat-eating dinosaurs and ranges from tiny dinosaurs such as the Microraptor up to gargantuan ones like the famous Tyrannosaurus rex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists believe the tridactyl \u2013 or \u2018three-toed\u2019 \u2013 print suggests it may have been made by a Megalosaurus-like dinosaur. These were among the first dinosaurs ever discovered, and the impressive-sounding name means \u2018great lizard\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lazin\u2019 on a sunny afternoon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But what can we learn of its behaviour?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFeatures of the footprint may even suggest that this large predator was squatting down before standing up,\u201d Dr Lomax continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fun to think this dinosaur might well have been strolling along a muddy coastal plain one lazy Sunday afternoon in the Jurassic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might be hard to imagine great dinosaurs walking along the same shores we humans love to amble down today \u2013 but this discovery could point to exactly that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Hudson, local geologist and lead author of a new study describing the find, explains: \u201cThis important discovery adds further evidence that meat-eating giants once roamed this area during the Jurassic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe type of footprint, combined with its age, suggests that it was made by a ferocious Megalosaurus-like dinosaur, with a possible hip height between 2.5 and three metres.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2023\/03\/Dino-footprint2-768x400-1.jpg\" alt=\"Artist's impression of a dinosaur leaving a giant footprint.\" class=\"wp-image-5335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2023\/03\/Dino-footprint2-768x400-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2023\/03\/Dino-footprint2-768x400-1-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption>Copyright: James McKay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">At large<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That sounds pretty big to us! Unsurprising, perhaps, given the print is a colossal 80 cm in length \u2013 much bigger than any previously unearthed in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was local archaeologist Marie Woods, now a co-author of the study, who made the discovery \u2013 a remarkable find that happened by chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t believe what I was looking at, I had to do a double take,\u201d she says. \u201cI have seen a few smaller prints when out with friends, but nothing like this. I can no longer say that \u2018archaeologists don\u2019t do dinosaurs\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the time of the discovery, it generated a lot of public interest and I was overwhelmed with the messages on social media from people around the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best foot forward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Experienced fossil collectors Mark, Aaron and Shae Smith expertly recovered the specimen, and during the rescue mission it emerged the track had actually been spotted five months earlier by local fossil hunter Rob Taylor \u2013 also a co-author \u2013 but the importance of the find had not then been realised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Lomax, another co-author of the study, which is published in the journal <em>Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society<\/em>, says: \u201cWe\u2019re incredibly grateful to Mark, Aaron and Shae for rescuing this important specimen and ensuring that it was saved for science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow that the specimen has been studied, plans are in motion for it to go on public display, to spark the imagination of the next generation of fossil hunters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Mike Romano of the University of Sheffield assisted in the examinations. An expert in collecting dinosaur tracks, he adds: \u201cThe east coast of Yorkshire is known as the Dinosaur Coast for very good reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA huge number of dinosaur tracks, ranging in the thousands, have been discovered.
