World Heritage Day falls on 18 April and with it lands an opportunity to celebrate and promote cultural heritage; to acknowledge its importance to our past, present and, indeed, future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, for us in the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), it is, this year, particularly pertinent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only are we continuing an important move from North Campus to our new home of Engineering and Materials, but 2023 also marks the 75th anniversary of both the arrival to Manchester of one of our heritage heroes, Alan Turing, and the building \u2013 here \u2013 of \u2018the Baby\u2019<\/a>, the world\u2019s first stored-program computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s more, the year has already witnessed the reopening of our wonderfully revamped Manchester Museum<\/a>, and \u2013 of course \u2013 we\u2019re approaching the University\u2019s highly-anticipated bicentenary celebrations, in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Add that this year\u2019s World Heritage Day<\/a> supports the theme \u2018heritage changes\u2019 through transformative climate action \u2013 and that environmental sustainability<\/a> is a key part of the University\u2019s unique social responsibility core strategic goal<\/a> \u2013 and we\u2019ve the perfect occasion to highlight FSE\u2019s truly remarkable history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making their mark<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here on The Hub we\u2019ve amassed a rich library<\/a> of science and engineering heritage content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve documented our illustrious past through fascinating imagery collections as part of a special \u2018in pictures\u2019 series (parts one<\/a>, two<\/a> and three<\/a>) and celebrated our most famous alumni<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other posts have centred on the exceptional achievements and eyebrow-raising tales of individuals who have played, and continue to play, significant roles in our ongoing story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Ernest Rutherford<\/a>\u2019s world-changing breakthroughs with artificial nuclear reactions<\/a> to Beatrice Shilling\u2019s ingenuity in assisting RAF pilots<\/a> in their battle against the Luftwaffe in World War II; from Sir William Boyd Dawkins\u2019 extraordinary geological and palaeontological discoveries<\/a> to Kathleen Drew-Baker’s pioneering work<\/a> that would lead, effectively, to saving the sushi industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others who made their mark include Sir John Cockroft<\/a>, instrumental in the development of nuclear power; Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw<\/a>, who did so much for education, politics, and the advancement of women; runner and \u2018Flying Doctor\u2019 Ron Hill<\/a>; and Rona Robinson<\/a>, the first UK woman to gain a first-class chemistry degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The list, of course, goes on\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An enigmatic arrival<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u2026and includes a certain mathematical genius and famed codebreaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alan Turing arrived at Manchester in 1948 \u2013 three-quarters of a century ago this year \u2013 and would make pronounced contributions to developments in computer science and AI research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, we recently answered the question \u2018what is the Turing Test?\u2019<\/a>, a method he devised for determining whether a computer is capable of thinking like a human; and in 2017 dug into his lost letters<\/a> \u2013 a cache of documents discovered inside an old filing cabinet at the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve also talked about Turing\u2019s incredible-yet-tragic life<\/a> with his nephew Dermot Turing; turned the spotlight on his philanthropy<\/a>; detailed little-known facts<\/a> about his professional and private life; and investigated how he \u2013 crucially \u2013 helped crack the Enigma code<\/a> in World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In such esteem is Turing held at the University that we named a building after him<\/a> \u2013 as we have for many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building on history<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

They include various spots across North Campus, and on The Hub we\u2019ve explored the names behind the buildings of the unmistakable Renold Building and musically significant Barnes-Wallis Building<\/a>; the electrifying Ferranti Building<\/a>; and the distinctive James Lighthill Building and Morton Laboratory<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North Campus represents a key chapter in the story of science and engineering at Manchester, and the awe-inspiring Sackville Street Building is at its heart. We\u2019ve taken a closer look at the fascinating symbolism to be found<\/a> \u2013 if you know where to look \u2013 around its exterior and interior; disclosed 12 riveting facts about its structure and history<\/a>; and even dared uncover its spooky past<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The intriguing Godlee Observatory sits atop the building, and we were lucky enough to climb up it<\/a> a few years ago \u2013 as we were, more recently, the iconic Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank<\/a>. Another off-campus location packed with history is the FIRS environmental research station<\/a>, which, we recently learned, made significant contributions to the First World War effort<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But moving from North Campus to the new home of Engineering and Materials certainly does not mean leaving history behind. In fact, we\u2019ve reported on how the unexpected discovery of a Victorian sewer beneath the new site<\/a> caused a re-think during its build; and revealed the surprising reincarnations of the beautiful Oddfellows Hall<\/a>, which forms a key part of the development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move, of course, marks an important milestone in a science and engineering journey that started long ago, and will continue for many years, decades, centuries \u2013 even \u2013 to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A uniquely trodden path \u2013 well worth celebrating this World Heritage Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
