Yet the work being carried out by the scientific community can touch on all areas of our lives \u2013 so it\u2019s a good idea to understand what it all means.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of CAMERA is to make tricky topics like chemistry accessible to everyone. Not only does this help us get to grips with important scientific research and its impact on us, but it also lets us find out about some pretty cool experiments.<\/p>\n<p>The work coming out of our School of Chemistry in the last two years alone has the potential to revolutionise how we live. For example, have you heard of qubits? They\u2019re units of quantum information that could act as the building blocks for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WafE8SxKAL8\">quantum computer<\/a> (does that mean it can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2017\/08\/08\/absolutely-purrfect-top-3-cats-science\/\">on and off at the same time<\/a>?!).<\/p>\n<p>And did you know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iEb81OPPJv0\">people with Parkinson\u2019s have a distinct smell<\/a>? This discovery was made by The University of Manchester following a meeting with the wife of a patient with the disease. She had spotted that he had a noticeable odour \u2013 and the finding could be key to diagnosing people with the condition earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the breakthrough our chemists made when they were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=58Zkk2Oeqtk\">studying the vitamin B12<\/a>. What makes B12 interesting is that when it\u2019s hit with light, it doesn\u2019t just glow, but it forms into something entirely new &#8211; and then into something else, and then into something else, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Why is this important? Well, depending on whether it\u2019s in the dark or the light, B12 can act as an \u2018on\u2019 or \u2018off\u2019 switch for genes. \u00a0This suggests it could potentially be used in phototherapeutic applications \u2013 but there\u2019s an ethical debate to be had first.<\/p>\n<h2>Making things clear<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-611 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/09\/Beakers-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/09\/Beakers-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/09\/Beakers-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/09\/Beakers-768x508.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2017\/09\/Beakers.jpg 1183w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re sure you\u2019ll agree these are some significant discoveries being made right here at The University of Manchester. But understanding the chemistry can be tough \u2013 which is why these new videos are such a valuable resource.<\/p>\n<p>Using interviews with some of our chemists and simple animations, the films make these complicated subjects far easier to comprehend. Understanding this work gets people interested \u2013 and an interest in science is what ensures we keep making important discoveries just like this for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can be really difficult for the outside world to see what science we do, and how it relates to real life, because it is so involved nowadays,\u201d Steve Liddle, Professor and Head of Inorganic Chemistry, explains. In order to raise the curtain surrounding the important but sometimes confusing work being done by the School of Chemistry, he came up with CAMERA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this series of films, we wanted to lift the lid on that and give people who are interested in science &#8211; of whom there are a good many &#8211; a way to obtain genuine insight into the massive developments coming out of the School of Chemistry here at The University of Manchester.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCXf3CFkyGpa2eIeT5wz_Prw\/videos\">first ten CAMERA videos here<\/a> \u2013 and there\u2019re plenty of subjects to choose from.
