Emily&#8217;s research investigates the effects of greenhouse gas emissions and a meteor impact on the Earth&#8217;s climate and the ways in which fieldwork to collect samples of fossilised bacteria from Cretaceous and Palaeogene rock informs her findings.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Each horizontal layer of coal has the power to paint us a detailed picture of the climate millions of years ago, and could therefore help us to predict what sort of changes we can expect in the upcoming few centuries\u2026&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/sees\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2020\/06\/EDCF-1-e1592811055277.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/sees\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2020\/06\/EDCF-1-e1592811055277.png 696w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/sees\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2020\/06\/EDCF-1-e1592811055277-300x198.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Emily D.C.-Flood started her three year postdoc in March 2019 at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, and she is working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.research.manchester.ac.uk\/portal\/rhodri.jerrett.html\">Dr. Rhodri Jerrett<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.research.manchester.ac.uk\/portal\/en\/researchers\/bart-van-dongen(4d458302-05a9-46de-80f0-cfd950ac1e47).html\">Dr. Bart van Dongen<\/a> on a project investigating the &#8216;Equable Earth&#8217; hypothesis. This project aims to understand what latitudinal temperature gradients were like in a &#8216;greenhouse&#8217; world, specifically looking at the latest Cretaceous and early Paleogene. The second aim of the project is to investigate what temperature changes occurred just before and after the infamous Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary (~66 million years ago), where the last major extinction occurred.
