The School released the first 12 films to the public this week, and you can watch them<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCXf3CFkyGpa2eIeT5wz_Prw\/videos\"> here<\/a>. Further short films will be released over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In it&#8217;s first week of being live CAMERA has attracted lots of attention so much so that an article has now been published on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/granada\/2017-10-02\/scientists-at-manchester-university-make-chemistry-easy-through-bitesize-videos\/\">ITV News.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Leading research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The films cover a wide range of research being carried out by our chemists and showcase the significant breakthroughs the School has made. For example, there\u2019s the finding that people with Parkinson\u2019s have a distinctive odour, which may help speed up diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the discovery our chemists made about vitamin B12. When hit with light, the vitamin forms into something entirely new, and then into something else, and so on. This reaction to light allows the vitamin to act as an \u2018on\u2019 or \u2018off\u2019 switch depending on whether it is in darkness or light. This could prove useful in the development of gene therapy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_74\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/uomchemistryblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2017\/09\/Ground-Floor-151.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/uomchemistryblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2017\/09\/Ground-Floor-151-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/uomchemistryblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2017\/09\/Ground-Floor-151-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/uomchemistryblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2017\/09\/Ground-Floor-151-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/uomchemistryblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2017\/09\/Ground-Floor-151-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/uomchemistryblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2017\/09\/Ground-Floor-151.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_74\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inside the Chemistry Building at Manchester<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Each film covers an individual area of research, like how qubits could be used to build a quantum computer, or how alcohol could be used to bioengineer amines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lifting the lid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this series of films, we wanted to lift the lid on that and give people who are interested in science \u2013 of whom there are a good many \u2013 a way to obtain genuine insight into the massive developments coming out of the School of Chemistry here at The University of Manchester,\u201d says Prof Liddle.<\/p>\n<p>He adds that he understands how difficult it can be for the public to see the research being done by scientists \u2013 and even harder for them to understand how it can relate to them.
