I was searching around for some PhD students to interview for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/uommaterialsblog?s=%23MondayMaterials\" target=\"_blank\">#MondayMaterials<\/a>, and whenever I asked someone on the a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.materials.manchester.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/undergraduate-courses\/materials-science-engineering\/\" target=\"_blank\">materials scientist<\/a> from\u00a0the School it was Aidan\u2019s name that came up. We originally scheduled an interview back in July, but for one reason or another it didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<p>Then, just a couple of episodes ago, we interviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/uommaterialsblog\/?p=1315\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Haigh<\/a>. It turns out that Sarah is Aidan\u2019s PhD supervisor. Can you guess who she recommended as soon as I asked the question?<\/p>\n<p>You got it \u2013 and here he is:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Hi Aidan. It\u2019s great to finally be chatting to you. Can you start by describing your research, for the layman, in ten sentences or less?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>My research is involving <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">graphene<\/a> and other two-dimensional materials.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m looking at the world\u2019s thinnest material, but down the thin end. The reason we\u2019re doing this is to see how different materials stack together, how they layer up, and how they delaminate.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And how can your research benefit the public?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>So it\u2019s a new field of materials science, called graphene and other two-dimensional materials. And these are envisaged to enter commercial production quite soon \u2013 in fact they\u2019ve already found an application in lightbulbs.<\/p>\n<p>They should impact on a lot of areas, particularly in materials science. But saying what they will do for definite is very difficult at this time.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Exciting\u00a0stuff\u00a0\u2013 it sounds like you\u2019re really getting in on the ground there. So how did you first get interested in your research area?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How did Aidan Rooney first get interested in his research area?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UZMRtN8JLIw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>So I do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.materials.manchester.ac.uk\/our-research\/facilities\/electron-microscopy\/\" target=\"_blank\">electron microscopy<\/a>. I first got interested at the last university I was at when I had a brief project, a couple of months, looking at sol gels and developing nanocrystals. We were able to directly image these using transmission electron microscopy, and no other technique really lets you image nanoparticles. And this is really exciting if you\u2019re a young scientist, and it sort of got me hooked.<\/p>\n<p>And then I came to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Manchester<\/a> and pursued it here.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Brilliant \u2013 well we\u2019re glad to have you here! So going back a bit further, can you tell us who or what first inspired your interest in science?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Who or what inspired Aidan Rooney&#039;s interests in science?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A5qMVMfanU8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>My mum and dad both do fairly scientific subjects. My mum; she\u2019s in the blood transfusion service in Scotland. And I\u2019ve always been quite interested in that.<\/p>\n<p>So, between the two off them I\u2019d say, yes, science was always on the cards for me.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And what about your other interests? What do you get up to in your spare time?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I usually go the Peak District or Wales. I really enjoy rock climbing and it\u2019s a great part of the country to do that. So we\u2019re out most weekends doing some climbing somewhere \u2013 limestone or gritstone. Or if it\u2019s raining we go indoors.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Thanks again, Aidan. And it also has perhaps one of the biggest electron microscope centres in the UK. So they have a big range of equipment here, and also they\u2019re buying new equipment all the time.<\/p>\n<p>It was a bit of a shock to come here and find so much equipment \u2013 there\u2019s a lot of training time to get on all of it! But it\u2019s been worth it. We\u2019re getting some fantastic results now, and some very interesting publications.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fantastic, thank you Aidan.
