\u201cIt is with great sadness that I share with you news of the passing of Dr Colin Leach on Friday, 27 March. Colin joined the Materials Science Centre as a Lecturer in 1994 and retired from the (School) Department of Materials as a Reader in 2016. He had previously been an academic at Imperial College London, where he studied for his PhD and spent time as a postdoc.<\/p>\n

Colin was distinguished for his work on the characterisation of the microstructure of ceramic materials, with a focus on performance optimisation and homogeneity of electrical behaviour for ceramics for industrial applications. He was an excellent citizen of the School and held a range of administrative and management roles, including Admissions Tutor, Director of Undergraduate Studies and Director of Teaching and Learning.<\/p>\n

Colin\u2019s leadership was pivotal in developing our current portfolio of taught programmes in Materials Science and Engineering. He was delighted to see the progress in our NSS scores over recent years.<\/p>\n
