Here in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.materials.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Department of Materials<\/a>, one student putting her skills to fantastic use is Olivia-Faye Dickinson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With the University campus in shutdown, Olivia &#8211; a third-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/courses\/2020\/09900\/meng-materials-science-and-engineering-with-textiles-technology\/\">Materials Science and Engineering with Textile Technology MEng<\/a> student &#8211; has returned to her summer job in Lichfield, working as a seamstress at alteration shop Tudor Sew.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alongside shop owner Tina, Olivia is voluntarily sewing scrubs for NHS staff in the local area &#8211; and is hoping to raise enough funds to buy the materials needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here she tells us more&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2091\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_2091\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2091\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/uommaterialsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2020\/04\/Olivia-768x400-1.jpg\" alt=\"Olivia working at her sewing machine\" width=\"768\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/uommaterialsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2020\/04\/Olivia-768x400-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/uommaterialsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2020\/04\/Olivia-768x400-1-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_2091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Olivia in action at her sewing machine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Tina was contacted by a local hospital in a general email asking small businesses for help to supply simple things during this time. She then suggested we voluntarily sew scrubs at home and fundraise the money to buy the materials (one scrubs costs about \u00a313 to make; materials-wise we need thread, fabric, washing labels and drawstring for the trousers), and the hospitals need hundreds during this time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Now I&#8217;m based away from campus I was onboard straightaway; I&#8217;m so glad to be able to use my skills to help. We have agreed with four local hospitals to donate our products to them: Burton Queens Hospital, Derby University Hospital, Samuel Johnson Lichfield and Robert Peel Tamworth.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;We have now been contacted by seamstresses we both know and don&#8217;t know to help, and have expanded into a group of 14 seamstresses and cutters.
