We caught up with Ben Hun who graduated from the MEng Materials Science & Engineering (with Foundation Year) in 2019 and is now working as a Graduate Engineer at WMG, an innovative academic science and engineering department at The University of Warwick.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Hi Ben, thanks for joining us on the Materials Blog! Congratulations on securing your role with WMG, did you expect to be in the job when you graduated from Manchester?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Only in the sense that I had received the job offer a month before my final exams!<\/span> \u00a0Before this<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0however, I had no idea what direction I was going in.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I ended up taking the 4th-year <\/span>MEng in\u00a0<\/span>Manchester after spending a lot of time applying for jobs during my 3<\/span>rd<\/span>\u00a0year and getting no result.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>At this point, I had no interest in undertaking any further academic research and I couldn\u2019t wait to get into an industry role.\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>hile completing my\u00a0<\/span>dissertation, however<\/span>, I\u00a0<\/span>realised<\/span>\u00a0I<\/span>\u00a0quite enjoyed the nature of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>research<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>projects!<\/span> \u00a0<\/span>I think this stemmed from the idea that I was completing \u2018my-own\u2019 project<\/span>\u00a0and the responsibility\u00a0<\/span>definitely gave<\/span>\u00a0me a drive.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The job opportunity for the graduate scheme I\u2019m\u00a0<\/span>currently<\/span> on was hidden away on <\/span>Careerslink<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>wasn\u2019t published\u00a0<\/span>on the\u00a0<\/span>usual<\/span>\u00a0\"\"<\/a>career<\/span>\u00a0apps and websites<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0I came across this as a last<\/span>–<\/span>minute\u00a0<\/span>search<\/span>\u00a0that was\u00a0<\/span>initiated<\/span>\u00a0by a career\u2019s team member<\/span> from the Careers Service at Manchester<\/a><\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What did you do (if anything) at University to explore your career options? Did you get involved in any activities which were unrelated to your degree?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

While I was at University, I took advantage of all the careers\u00a0<\/span>service\u00a0<\/span>events<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0Mock interviews,<\/span>\u00a0CV advice,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>LinkedIn 101 session,\u00a0<\/span>Manchester Gold\u00a0<\/span>Mentoring\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>Manchester<\/span>\u00a0Network. I found that\u00a0<\/span>communicating with professionals at these events and building up my LinkedIn presence helped me be<\/span>come<\/span>\u00a0aware of the\u00a0<\/span>various<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>opportunities available.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The<\/span>ir career\u00a0<\/span>stories also provided me with reassurance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of the time<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0professionals are very happy to answer questions, especially if they work\u00a0<\/span>at<\/span> a company you have an interview for (top tip!).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Have you stayed in one sector\/job role or moved around? Are there any benefits or drawbacks you have perceived to this approach?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Currently, I<\/span>\u2019<\/span>m\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0the final year of my graduate scheme<\/span>\u00a0though\u00a0<\/span>I hope to stay and move to a\u00a0<\/span>permanent<\/span>\u00a0position<\/span>\u00a0for a couple of years<\/span>.<\/span>
\nI really enjoy what I do and<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0as I work across projects, I feel like I get\u00a0<\/span>various challenges<\/span>. It seems that in engineering, there are always\u00a0<\/span>new<\/span>\u00a0problems to solve!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Personally, I<\/span>\u00a0don\u2019t see any drawbacks to this approach<\/span>. I\u00a0<\/span>definitely haven\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0decided on what I want to do<\/span>\u00a0in my career<\/span>\u00a0and getting\u00a0<\/span>professional\u00a0<\/span>experience\u00a0<\/span>is much easier when you are in any professional role<\/span>. So far, I am just making the most of learning on the Graduate scheme<\/span>\u00a0and will see where that takes me<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0Organisations are a lot more interdisciplinary than you think and you\u2019d be surprised\u00a0<\/span>by<\/span>\u00a0where you can end up with your degree.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What challenges, obstacles or setbacks have you faced so far in your career?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

I haven\u2019t,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>as of yet<\/span><\/span>, really had any. I know my first few months were quite\u00a0<\/span><\/span>overwhelming<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and I didn\u2019t quite know what\u00a0<\/span><\/span>supervisors<\/span><\/span>\u00a0expected of me,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>but<\/span><\/span>\u00a0just like after the first months of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>uni<\/span><\/span>, you soon get into the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>swing of it!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you could go back in time what advice would you give yourself as a UoM student regarding your career?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Not to panic<\/span>\u00a0too much<\/span>\u00a0about things.<\/span> I feel like you get very disheartened when applying for jobs and the process (online tests, <\/span>psychometric<\/span>\u00a0tests, pre-recorded interviews, assessment days, final interviews\u2026) but I found I did much better once you were there on the interview day. I followed all the tips and tricks the career\u2019s team offered\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>o\u00a0<\/span>support<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>your<\/span>\u00a0mindset on the day. From the two face-to-face interviews I had, I got an offer! Which is a\u00a0<\/span>tiny\u00a0<\/span>fraction of all the application forms I filled out.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Try everything and don\u2019t assume.<\/span>\u00a0I originally wanted to do chemical engineering, but\u00a0<\/span>after<\/span>\u00a0failing to get\u00a0<\/span>onto the course\u00a0<\/span>following<\/span>\u00a0my foundation year, I ended up on\u00a0<\/span>a M<\/span>aterials\u00a0<\/span>Science BSc. T<\/span>hen\u00a0<\/span>I applied for the<\/span>\u00a0M<\/span>Eng<\/span>\u00a0when I didn\u2019t know where to go, which\u00a0<\/span>ultimately\u00a0<\/span>lead me to the job I\u2019m in now.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Begin careers searching early on and learn from mistakes. I know from my job applications in my 3<\/span>rd<\/span>\u00a0year compared to my 4<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0year, there was a marked\u00a0<\/span>improvement<\/span>. The rejection I\u00a0<\/span>experienced had<\/span>\u00a0initially g<\/span>iven<\/span>\u00a0me the chance to reflect and build a better\u00a0<\/span>approach<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
