Open Evening, DigiLab and Free Stuff
Welcome to Maths 20th October 2014
Time is truly flying past and we are now heading into week five. Next week is Reading Week, and you know what that means… EXAMS! Yes, my mid-terms are fast approaching and, as I suspected, my heap of work is slowly evolving into a mountain. The past few weeks have gone so unbelievably quickly it is surprising to me that I have only been here for a month or so and I really am loving living away from home now. Here’s a little bit more about what I have been up to…
Last week I attended an Open Evening for a company called Towers Watson. The evening was all about informing us about the opportunities available to use while we are at university and after. I’ll admit, it wasn’t really aimed at first year students, like myself, but that didn’t stop me going to find out more. Specifically, we were told about Actuarial Consulting. And if you don’t know what an actuary is… well, it’s someone who assesses risks in order to minimise financial losses and a lot of other stuff, too. The evening was really interesting and helpful. We were told about all of the insight days offered and other opportunities available for in our second and third years. Grabbing all chances like this one is a great idea, no matter what year you are in. Even if it isn’t aimed at your age group, soon it will be and networking and getting used to a formal office environment is worth your while – AND we got a goodie bag.
In the same week, I visited the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons (A.K.A The Ali G). There was event on called “DigiLab”. Basically, the event had great new technology on offer for us all to have a nosey at. For example, I tried on the Google Glass. It was pretty impressive. I was most excited to have a look at the 3D printer, but unfortunately they were having some “technical difficulties” and it wasn’t really doing much. Overall though, it was great fun to have a look at all of this hi-tech equipment and I probably wouldn’t have had the chance to see these things otherwise.
During fresher’s week, as I mentioned last time, there were lots of freebies to be nabbed and lots of competitions. One of which was a Coke Zero competition with AMC Cinemas. Turns out I won cinema tickets! So my flat mates and I took a trip to go and see ‘Gone Girl’ – and it was SO good! Aside from that, we got so much free stuff to take in with us… and as a student, you appreciate all of the free things you can get your hands on!
University is great so far but a lot of hard work. Next time I will probably be updating you on the nightmare that is ‘mid-terms’ and letting you know how they all went. In the meantime, I will have my head down in the books! See you soon!
