Dr Akilu Yunusa-Kaltungo is a lecturer in Reliability and Maintenance Engineering in MACE, and is the Admissions Tutor for our Master’s courses in engineering. We caught up for a quick chat about his role in the Department and life in Manchester…
Give us a very brief overview of what you did before working in MACE.
I worked as maintenance, health & safety and training managers at LafargeHolcim Cement PLC before completing the MSc in Reliability Engineering and Asset Management here in MACE, followed by my PhD.
Can you summarise your research in one sentence?
My research is mainly about eliminating and minimising downtime associated with industrial assets and systems through effective maintenance strategies.
How can your research benefit society?
My research benefits the society by averting costly industrial failures through early detection and learning from previous lessons of failures and successes in maintenance.
What do you love the most about your job?
Helping my students achieve their dreams.
What’s the best thing about Manchester?
The REDNESS of Manchester United!
Who or what inspires you?
My family inspires me the most.
What is your top tip for living in Manchester?
Always carry an umbrella!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Playing football with my kids and friends.
What would be your top desert island disc, your top desert island book and your one luxury item?
Finding a voice (Maya Angelou), the Holy Qur’an and my wallet.
