Pathway Profile: Atmospheric and Climate Science

Professor Martin Gallagher and Professor Grant Allen spoke to us about the Atmospheric and Climate Science Pathway within our undergraduate Environmental Science degree.
Manchester is one of only a few universities to offer degrees combining Earth and Environmental Science with Atmospheric and Climate Science, providing exciting insights into the Earth as a dynamic and living system and our place within it. Atmospheric science defines many of the global challenges we face as stewards of our planet, from climate change and extreme weather to air quality, and the impacts these have on our environment, ecosystem and way of life.
This new pathway explores these themes through a set of core and optional units that complement each other, allowing you to pursue the subjects that interest you the most. For example, pathway-specific units such as Global Climate Change and Climate and Energy will teach you about the Earth’s energy budget and the detailed mechanics of climate change. These link closely with units such as Remote Sensing of Atmospheres, Atmospheric Composition, Atmospheric Modelling and Meteorology and Forecasting, which will teach you about the methods and analytical tools that scientists use to measure and predict the atmospheric system, such as satellites, aircraft, and computer modelling. Alongside knowledge-based lecture courses, you will conduct practical and computational laboratory work to develop as a practicing scientist and problem solver, while each year includes a UK or international fieldwork week, during which you will study and interpret the real environment.
In the final year, you will choose and undertake a cutting-edge research project, using real data and state-of-the-art models and instruments, working alongside members of our atmospheric science research group. Other options include the chance to combine the programme with a research placement with industry, or a year studying abroad. Like all our pathways, the first year will provide a broad-based grounding in relevant underpinning sciences, technologies and methods. Our group tutorial and one-to-one academic advisory structure ensure you are nurtured, guided and supported in your choices and personal ambitions at every step.
Graduate scientists with an understanding of these linked themes and the modern tools we use to study, measure and predict the Earth and atmospheric system, are in high demand in an ever growing UK and international sector. Government departments, local authorities, regulators, consultancies, corporations, and academic institutions all urgently and directly need the specific skills of our graduates, while the wider skills of a numerate and critical scientific problem solver provide access to careers such as finance, policy, teaching and corporate social responsibility (plus many more).
