Study Abroad Diaries: Maya Gilbert – post 1
Student experience 27th August 2019
Meet Maya, who will be keeping us up to date during her study abroad year as she ventures to Singapore. Here’s her first blog post, written earlier this month, just before she embarked on her travels.
My name is Maya, I’m 20 and from London. I’ve just completed my second year of my Chemistry degree at Manchester and in two weeks I’ll be moving to Singapore to study there for a year!
Living and studying in Manchester has been amazing but the idea of studying abroad for a year has always appealed to me and I did not want to reject the opportunity to spend a year in a completely new environment. Moving from London to Manchester seemed like a huge change at first but I quickly adapted and got used to living in unfamiliar surroundings. I am positive that I will experience the same adaptation when I arrive in Singapore.
I will be studying at Nanyang Technological University on the West coast of Singapore. Unlike Manchester, it is a campus university and is not integrated within the main city of Singapore. I am excited by this prospect as I believe that campus living will allow me to get used to the new environment and feel more comfortable faster than if I had to adjust to a whole new city as well as a new university and new continent all at once!
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a modern university, it boasts impressive, futuristic buildings and is surrounded by greenery. The university is very young compared to an institution such as Manchester and therefore it’s an underdog in tertiary education. In order to gain recognition and move up in league tables, NTU must ensure high standards are maintained and students are working hard. This drive to be recognised as a top university fosters a unique fast-paced learning environment for students and I am excited to become a part of it!
Thank you for your first post Maya! We look forward to hearing how you get on throughout the year.
