Society Spotlights: PhysSoc
Student experience Uncategorized 16th January 2023
Our new blog series, Society Spotlights, will be shedding light on some of the amazing physics-related societies that you can join at The University of Manchester. And who better to kick us off than PhysSoc?
Hi there, thank you for joining us on the blog! Can you tell us a little about PhysSoc?
PhysSoc has been at the heart of the Department of Physics & Astronomy for some time now. By organising weekly academic and social events, we aim to unite students with a common interest in physics and guide them through their time in Manchester.
So, what type of events do you run?
The heart of the society is physics. With this in mind, we run academic events focused on all areas of physics such as seminars, discussion panels, posters, events, etc with academic staff from the department or in collaboration with other societies.
One of our main goals is to give our members the opportunity to meet new people, discuss fascinating topics and have fun. To that end, we also run social events like pub crawls, coffee mornings, a Physics Ball, etc.
Can you tell us about some of the highlights from the last year?
I believe the most iconic and popular event remains Pint with a Professor. Although, the Christmas dinner jointly organised last year with eight other STEM societies was a huge success!
Who can join PhysSoc, and how can people join?
Anyone (physics students or not) who is interested in physics is welcomed to join the society.
You don’t need to do anything, just come to the events!! We’re always happy to see new faces and you can always come talk to committee members if you have any questions.
Why should students join?
Students should join because of the sense of community PhysSoc offers. The academic events can be a good reminder of why you started studying physics in the first place and give you a more precise and complete idea of what’s happening in the physics world outside of lectures. The social events help create a good work-life balance, as well as being the perfect opportunity to meet new people. We are working very hard this year to organise original, fun, and interesting events, with opportunities to get more involved!!
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions and comments! All the information about our events is on our Instagram @physsocuom. You can also follow us on Twitter @PhysSoc_UoM or Facebook group PhysSoc Manchester.
