The Faculty of Science and Engineering’s new podcast The Buzz: A science and engineering podcast will be exploring the past, present and future of a chosen topic each month – and kicks things off with an issue close to our hearts in the Department of Materials: fast fashion.
Convenient yet controversial, fast fashion is a term used for buying clothes online, cheap and with quick delivery. There are concerns, however, about its emergence – including its environmental impact and links to exploitation.
In this episode, Dr Patsy Perry, Former Senior Lecturer in Fashion Marketing, and Dr Amy Benstead, Lecturer in Fashion Management, delve into this dark side of modern fashion. Rachel Cox, a graduate of the Fashion Buying and Merchandising course, also offers her thoughts.
The team also casts an eye over Manchester’s fashion heritage – from the Industrial Revolution and ‘Cottonopolis’ to the ‘Madchester’ scene of the late 1980s.
