Pathway Profile: Geology
Dr Stefan Schröder discusses the Geology Pathway within our undergraduate Earth and Planetary Sciences degree.
Sustainable Geoscience for Our Future: An interview with Professor Chris Jackson
In this interview, our Chair in Sustainable Geoscience, Professor Chris Jackson, discusses the ways that research, study and science communication in Earth and Environmental Sciences maps onto the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Chris also considers the title ‘sustainable geoscience’ and how, by defining this term, we can establish directions in geoscience going forward.
International Experience at UoM: Xuexiao Shan
Xuexiao Shan has now completed her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science at the University of Manchester. In this blog post Xuexiao shares her experiences of studying, volunteering and working as a Student Ambassador for the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Meet your lecturers: introducing the first year teaching team
The common first year of our undergraduate degree programmes provides new students with the skills they need to specialise on any of our Pathways starting from year 2. Our common first year also allows students to transfer between courses if their interests shift during their first year – between Environmental Science and Earth and Planetary Science. We would now like to introduce you to the teaching teams for the common first year…
Earth Science Matters: Biology and Chemistry
On 5th February 2020, the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Manchester welcomed A level students to experience a day of lectures and activities on campus. The aim of the day was to demonstrate how A level Chemistry and Biology are both applicable and essential to the study of the earth and the environment.
Research Roundup: Undergraduate student co-authors paper on the structure and evolution of the Sorbas basin
Our new feature, ‘Research Roundup’ aims to highlight recent research activities and articles in the Department.
Professor Ernest Rutter shared details of an open access article published in November 2019 entitled ‘On the structure and evolution of the Sorbas basin, S.E. Spain’, available from Tectonophysics journal. Contributor Alicia McCabe was a 4th year undergraduate student here at UoM Earth and Environmental Sciences during the composition of the article.
In conversation with Dr Russell Garwood, Lecturer
I spoke to Dr Russell Garwood about everything from computational palaeobiology (his own coinage), William Blake and black metal, recreating evolutionary processes digitally, and, the new degree programmes in Earth and Environmental Sciences at Manchester.
Pathway Profile: Palaeobiology
Dr Robert Sansom spoke to us about the Palaeobiology Pathway within our undergraduate Earth and Planetary Sciences degree.
Pathway Profile: Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology
Dr Giles Johnson spoke to us about the Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology Pathway within our undergraduate Environmental Science degree.
