The University of Manchester
Welcome to CE 23rd June 2016
I’d tell them that there are fantastic, well-paid, and exciting jobs waiting for them if they study STEM subjects. And that they should not be afraid to challenge themselves intellectually.

Well I’m a Research Associate, also known as a PDRA. It’s a really special position within the universities because almost all of us are attached to different projects. So although we are part of the University, we are basically just linked with that one project.

I’ve learnt a lot from my placement so far! I feel like my communication skills have improved immensely after talking to colleagues and managers all at different levels of the company.

I spend a lot of my time performing analysis of our site operations, looking at how well we model (predict) the running of the refinery. This involves a lot of communication across all areas of the site, as well as the use of many modelling and analysis tools to compare data.

In that area, of course, when I do a good job, or when the industry takes up my research, then it leads to price reductions or time to market reductions. So that means that pharmaceuticals might be available faster or might be cheaper. And that, of course, is highly beneficial to the general public. I would say in any Western state, but also, specifically the UK.

Try and get some experience beforehand. This will help you find out whether the industry is for you. You should also apply to as many companies as possible if you have your heart set on getting a placement. Any experience is better than no experience.
Student experience 3rd December 2015
I chose this course due to a love of science. The variety I previously mentioned is hard to find on other courses and allows me to apply a real mix of knowledge, with maths and physics as the main topics but chemistry and even biology also being studied.

Yeah, so I think the way I kind of got into engineering, and becoming an academic in chemical engineering, involved a lot of luck. Some conscious decisions as well, but really it was sort of a random path that ended up in the right place. I think I’m in the right place for me, and that’s because what I always had was curiosity.
